Wilco

Master dev skills using a 'flight simulator' for developers

Wilco launched on June 21, 2022 with 450 votes, #16 of 3,005 launches that month and more than 99% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 4 years on.

In plain words

Wilco is an online platform that helps developers improve their skills through quest-based challenges simulating real-world engineering problems. Users select their preferred tech stack and work through scenarios to learn new technologies, refresh existing knowledge, and earn achievements. It's designed for developers looking to advance professionally through hands-on practice rather than traditional learning methods.

A farewell note to the trywilco.com community. Wilco is joining Lemonade.

To everyone who built, broke, learned, and laughed with us on trywilco.com - thank you. At Wilco, we've always believed in the power of practical experience in software engineering. That's why we built a "flight simulator" for developers: a place where you can break things, debug messy systems, and handle real-world complexity... without causing any real damage. Being a true AI-Native company means we built this with just a handful of people. Today, we're excited to share that the team is joining Lemonade. While coding received most of the attention, we saw it as just one of many skills - no more important than architecture, communication, and everything else that makes great engineers,…from trywilco.com

I originally built this app to organize and reuse interesting React + Tailwind components I came across on Twitter, inspired by the shadcn/ui approach. Later, a friend started contributing their own components, and it got me thinking—this could grow into something bigger, like an NPM for design engineers to share and use components. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

I've seen some interests in (simulation) video games here on HN so I thought I'd share a short version of our story. More than 6 years ago, me and my friend from university were playing around with an idea of making a game we always wanted to play. We worked on it on weekends but the progress was quite slow, especially due to so many dead ends and wasted effort. Eventually however, we solidified our direction and decided to take the risk to resign from our well paid SWE jobs and work on it full time. It took more than a year but yesterday we have finally released it on Steam:…
