24 alternatives to A book introducing Geospatial and Rust

My friend and I have been collaborating on this lighthearted introduction to doing geospatial computation in rust. Don't know Rust? Don't know geospatial? I'd be interested to know what you think.

This is a book providing an introduction to geospatial computation using the Rust programming language. It is designed for people new to either Rust or geospatial concepts, or both. The book page links to a blog post that explains how I got about it (and has a link to sample content), but the TL&DR is that I could not find a lot of books that were on "our" history _and_ were larded with technical details. So I set about writing one, and some five years later I'm happy to share the result. I think it's one of the few "computer history" books that has tons of code, but correct me if I'm wrong (I wrote this both to tell a story and to learn :-)). My favorite languages are Smalltalk and Lisp, but as an Emacs user, I've been using the latter for much longer and for my…

Hi all, I've talked about glidesort a few times on HN already, but it's finally ready for release. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. An academic paper on glidesort that goes into a lot more detail than the readme is upcoming, but is not ready yet. I will be giving a talk on glidesort tomorrow at FOSDEM 2023 in the Rust Devroom at 16:10, you can seek me out there as well. In other news, I am leaving academia soon, so if you have interesting (Rust) jobs the coming months feel free to approach me.

Hey all, wanted to share my recent weekend hack project. I wanted to improve upon the existing space for looking up information about IP addresses and ASNs. The backend is written in Rust and pulls BGP data every 8 hours from the RIPE RIS project to build up a routing table and also adds geolocation information. The frontend is using React and Tailwind. Would love any feedback or suggestions on what to improve.

I started writing this book 10 years ago in JavaScript, got through a few chapters (asymptotic notation, basic techniques, start of sorting), and then abandoned it. Recently I picked it back up, converted everything to TypeScript, and used AI (Zenflow [1] + Claude Opus 4.6) to complete the remaining chapters. I provided the structure, direction, and initial chapters; the AI generated the bulk of the remaining content under a spec-driven workflow. The book covers roughly a first 1-2 year CS curriculum: sorting, dynamic programming, graph algorithms, trees, heaps, hash tables, and more. All…

"Game" is a stretch, but I put together this repo containing a pure Rust app which uses SDL2 and compiles to WASM (and can be run in a browser). Older resources were a bit out of date and a bit too verbose for my purposes, so here's a minimal working example.

I personally haven't event used or looked at Rust so I don't have an opinion. So now I'm interested hearing what others think? I think the syntax of Rust isn't very appealing, but that's not a good reason to /not/ look at it. Convince me? :)
