Beating the Optimal Stopping Rule with Game Specific Knowledge is a research project that explores how domain-specific knowledge can improve decision-making beyond standard optimal stopping algorithms. Hi everyone! After spending hundreds of hours, we're excited to finally share our progress in developing a reinforcement learning system to beat Pokémon Red. Our system successfully completes the game using a policy under 10M parameters, PPO, and a few novel techniques. With the release of Claude Plays Pokémon, now feels like the perfect time to showcase our work. We'd love to get feedback!

Thought I would post in celebration of 1 year of my website being online. I've been working on it on and off and currently the website allows users to play Hex, Tumbleweed, Amazons, and Connect 6 against friends or against practice bots. I've been a long time player of some of these games and I felt for a long time that the world could use a few more popular abstract strategy games compared to Chess or Go. If you try it, let me know what you think. I'm always looking for new games or new features to add :)

Hi HN, Sharing my poker preflop trainer product, a subset of my Live Poker Theory project. https://www.livepokertheory.com/trainer Live Poker Theory helps translate complex poker solver strategy to actionable strategies while playing and aims to make studying poker more efficient and more fun. While I usually try to focus on sharing it in poker communities, I saw a few poker articles frontpage this site so I figure it doesn't hurt to share it here. In case you don't know, before 2015 most poker software could only calculate "all-in equity" - if there was no game tree and…

We’ve been building visual rule engines (clear spreadsheet interfaces -> API endpoints that map incoming data to a large number of potential outcomes), and had the fun idea lately to see what happens when we use our decision table UI with Claude’s PreToolUse hook. The result is a surprisingly useful policy/gating layer– these tables let your team: - Write conditional, exception-friendly policies beyond globs/prefixes (e.g. allow rm -rf only in */node_modules/*, deny / or $HOME, ask if --force or network call; gate kubectl delete / SQL DROP with a clear reason) -…

We wanted to test if a smaller model like GPT-4.1-mini could beat its bigger brother 4.1 at the game Tic-Tac-Toe using only context engineering. We put them in a 100-game tournament. For the smaller model, we gave it a few examples of winning moves from past games right before it made its own move. The results were clear. Without the examples, the smaller model struggled against GPT-4.1. With the examples, its effectiveness increased by nearly 200%, and it consistently won. It's a simple demonstration, but it shows that a smaller, faster model with good, timely examples can outperform a more…

This paper formally defines where current AGI hits a structural wall — not a technical one. It shows that no amount of scaling, reinforcement learning, or recursive optimization will break through three deep epistemological and formal constraints: 1. Semantic Closure — An AI system cannot generate outputs that require meaning beyond its internal frame. 2. Non-Computability of Frame Innovation — New cognitive structures cannot be computed from within an existing one. 3. Statistical Breakdown in Open Worlds — Probabilistic inference collapses in environments with heavy-tailed uncertainty.…

Hey HN, We explored how decision-making happens under severe information asymmetry and used career exploration as a test subject. In practice, people converge on a small set of highly legible default paths, with little visibility into credible alternatives. That’s why we’re building Fig, a tool for reasoning about career paths when the next step isn’t obvious, given the dependence on fleeting personal preferences. Most existing tools respond by collapsing uncertainty into a single recommendation or by modeling careers as linear trajectories. That works reasonably well at the recruiting…

I built 1e4.ai - a chess web app where you play against neural networks trained to mimic human Lichess players at specific Elo ranges. There's a separate model for each 100-point rating bucket from ~800 to 2200+, and the bots not only choose human-like moves but also burn clock time, play worse under time pressure, and blunder in human-like ways. Live demo: https://1e4.ai Code: https://github.com/thomasj02/1e4_ai A few things that might be interesting: - Trained on almost a full year of Lichess blitz games, around 1B total games - Architecture is an a small…
