Many years ago (2007?) I put together this site: http://www.tripzard.com . I never launched it, because it was basically a MVP/POC so it's not very refined, but I just found it again today and was surprised it still kind of works decent. The idea was kind of like "Find Your Spot" where you answer a bunch of questions about what you like to do when you travel, and it calculates where the best places for your to travel would be. Hey HN! I’m excited to introduce Companero, my open-source ridesharing solution! As a traveler, I often struggled to find rides in smaller cities. So I built Companero on Telegram using pure Java 21 and MongoDB. I recently added a rating system to this app to make rides safer, but all in all, you can request a ride using your location, can see recommended trip price based on your country (it has an index for each country and a currency converter) and much more features. Today we've launched happytables ( http://www.happytables.com ), a squarespace / wordpress.com for restaurants. I had posted on HN before about a previous iteration we performed ( http://bit.ly/sn0FWc ), and am really satisfied how far we've gotten with it all. The entire solution is built on top of WordPress, it's allowed us to quickly prototype and build various components. It'll be interesting to see if other solutions pop-up for unrelated niche markets using WordPress too (i.e. real estate, sports clubs, etc.). So a while ago I was thinking it would be neat to build a site that had the most absolute utility. The idea I came up with was a site to store those little protips that are super useful, if you know them ahead of time. Hi Hackers, My wife and I have been slow traveling around the world for last 3 years, and our top travel hack that has saved us most amount of money is to book directly with Airbnb host. We usually rent for a month so savings in fees are easily ~$300 - $500 on each stay, i.e. about 15-20%. So, this summer I was hunting for a flight from Calgary to Tokyo with WestJet, and I kept seeing these random cheaper flights popping up. I got tired of refreshing the site non-stop, so I whipped up a script to scrape the flight data. It paid off—I scored a roundtrip for $1000 CAD in July!
