When traveling, in case my destination country does not have a Mullvad server, I often need to figure out which of the servers in surrounding locations have the lowest latency. This usually involves searching for servers around me, and then a lot of pinging, which, having done it twice, I decided to automate.

I figured this might be useful to folks. It's a simple PHP server that requires a single-table database (It's fairly "agnostic," but all my uses are in MySQL). I won't publish any of the servers that I've set up for my apps, because someone is bound to write an application that drives my bandwidth into the stratosphere. If my experience is any indicator, the DNS issue seems to be getting worse as the hours go by, not better. However, I have found that adding OpenDNS servers (208.67.222.222, 208.67.222.222) to my list of DNS servers has completely eliminated the issue, at least for the time being. So, under my IPv4 configuration, in the "DNS Servers" field, I have "208.67.222.222, 208.67.222.222, 8.8.8.8" - the last one is the Google DNS server. I'm able to resolve Twitter, Github, etc.

After the major outages from AWS and Cloudflare, I began wondering how to make my own services more resilient. Using nameservers from different providers is doable but a bit tricky to manage. OctoDNS helps automate keeping the zones synced so AWS, Cloudflare, etc. are all serving the same information.
