Sup HN, So I got tired of bouncing between Flightradar, MarineTraffic, and Twitter every time something kicked off globally, so I wrote a dashboard to aggregate it all locally. It’s called Shadowbroker. I’ll admit I leaned way too hard into the "movie hacker" aesthetic for the UI, but the actual pipeline underneath is real. It pulls commercial/military ADS-B, the AIS WebSocket stream (about 25,000+ ships), N2YO satellite telemetry, and GDELT conflict data into a single MapLibre instance. Getting this to run without melting my browser was the hardest part. I'm running this on a laptop…

I've been working on this for a while now, and I'm happy to share! I've been into launching weather balloons for a few years. One aspect of the hobby that really drew me in was the tracking side of things. Tracking systems let you follow the balloon's position throughout the flight and, most importantly, know exactly where it lands so you can recover the instrumentation. APRS is what I started out using during my first few years in the hobby, after I got my amateur radio license in 2020 (W0MXX). I designed a few small boards using the trackuino…

I had really bad health anxiety the last 2 years that severely impacted my quality of life. I started using Claude for support and was surprised by how much it helped. I realised how much potential there is for LLMs to provide an objective perspective on stressful thoughts - so I built an app that helps you form a habit around this to reduce long term anxiety. You vent what's on your mind and an LLM will evaluate your thoughts objectively (heavily leaning on CBT techniques), to help you maintain a more balanced perspective. Technical stack: - Flutter (to release cross-platform) - OpenAI API…

I needed to test how my app performed on airplane WiFi and found that existing tools (Network Link Conditioner, comcast, Chrome DevTools, etc) weren't sufficient. AirplaneMode is a macOS CLI and menu bar app that uses a local MASQUE relay to provide: 1. Jitter. All of the mac os network simulators I tried apply a fixed constant delay with no jitter model. Real airplane satellite WiFi follows a log-normal distribution — most packets arrive near base RTT, but a few percent spike to 5-10x. AirplaneMode samples jitter from a log-normal distribution fit to real flight measurements. 2. Userspace,…
