My weekend project sendenv is a CLI tool that lets you share environment variables securely with someone else. It is built on top of magic-wormhole which allows for safe, account-free data transfer. When you send variables using sendenv, it creates a one-time code. You give this code to the person who needs the variables. They use the code in their shell to load the variables. I built this because I was always creating machines on GH actions to test builds on different OS, and I wanted a tight CLI that could do it. I always saw Actions as this great resources and ephemeral machines you could do dev work in just were a natural way for me to work, so this grew out of that workflow. I didn't expect it to blow up, so it wasn't 100% finished when I posted it. But it should stabilize pretty quickly. Happy to know what you think and talk about it.

I like the idea of using dotenv files, but I dislike having to use different language-specific libraries to read them. To solve this, I created a small utility that lets you prefix any command with "dotenv" to load the ".env" file. This is how I imagine dotenv would work if it had started as a UNIX utility rather than a Node.js library.

I had this idea when I made a big mistake and broke some production stuff because I had a very messy .env file laying around in my project. The problem: My team's secrets lived in a mix of Slack DMs, shared Google Docs, and .env files that definitely weren't in .gitignore at some point. Hi! I've been frustrated with the secret sharing situation in serverside javascript land for a while; the common thing is to just toss .env files around on Slack to get someone's app working, or involves some kind of convoluted setup to get a blob from a storage and turn it into environment variables via commands I have to copy paste every time. But everyone uses secret storage providers, e.g. shared password vaults, cloud secrets, etc., so why not leverage those as URIs in a JSON file that can be checked in to source control?
