Reddit's API is effectively dead for archival. Third-party apps are gone. Reddit has threatened to cut off access to the Pushshift dataset multiple times. But 3.28TB of Reddit history exists as a torrent right now, and I built a tool to turn it into something you can browse on your own hardware. The key point: This doesn't touch Reddit's servers. Ever. Download the Pushshift dataset, run my tool locally, get a fully browsable archive. Works on an air-gapped machine. Works on a Raspberry Pi serving your LAN. Works on a USB drive you hand to someone. What it does: Takes compressed data dumps…

I’ve been in the MLOps space for ~10 years, and data is still the hardest unsolved open problem. Code is versioned using Git, data is stored somewhere else, and context often lives in a 3rd location like Slack or GDocs. This is why we built XetHub, a platform that enables teams to treat data like code, using Git. Unlike Git LFS, we don’t just store the files. We use content-defined chunking and Merkle Trees to dedupe against everything in history. This allows small changes in large files to be stored compactly. Read more here:…

I always assumed Gmail bloat came from large attachments. Turns out 3 senders were responsible for 30% of my inbox — thousands of tiny emails I'd never thought to clean up. I built mailtrim to surface this pattern: - ranks senders by actual storage impact (not just count) - confidence scoring on what's safe to bulk-delete - 30-day undo on everything — nothing is permanent by default - runs entirely locally, no email data leaves your machine Free, open source (MIT). No subscription, no backend. One friction point upfront: Gmail API setup is one-time, ~15 min. After that it's just `mailtrim…

I've spent the last few months working on something I wish I'd had years ago. I kept running into the same issue: CI green, production mail broken. TLS handshake failures, DKIM alignment mismatches, SPF soft-fails ... the stuff that only surfaces when real mail servers are involved. Most test tools (Mailpit, MailHog) are catch-alls. They confirm "an email was sent" but don't validate the protocol. They also aren't designed for network-exposed environments: no auth, unprotected Web UI, easy to enumerate messages. VaultSandbox is my attempt at fixing that. It's a self-hosted SMTP gateway…

Hey HN, I’d like to share an open-source project I’ve created. It is an email archiving tool that can back up your whole email system with full-text search capabilities. The project is called Open Archiver, and it is able to archive and index emails from cloud-based email inboxes, including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and any IMAP-enabled email inbox. You can connect it to your email provider, and it copies every single incoming and outgoing email into a secure archive that you control (Your local storage or S3-compatible storage). Some features: - Archive and index all emails and…

Inspired by the ongoing call-to-action by the Internet Archive team over at /r/DataHoarder [1], I've decided I want to try to preserve all cybersecurity related subreddits. [2] For people that don't know what's going on: There's a likelihood that the try to monetize the Reddit API will lead to a lot of moderators quitting the platform, and it could be that a lot of subreddits are going to be set on private and/or their threads are going to be deleted. At least that's kind of the fear from the ongoing moderator strike. In my case I learned a LOT from reddits' discussions about…

Introducing Posthorn, a self hosted email gateway. One docker container (or Go binary) between every self hosted app on your VPS and your transactional email provider. Set up Posthorn once, point your apps to it, done. I was trying to deploy Ghost on a DigitalOcean droplet and found that DO and many different VPS services have started to block the default SMTP ports to try to combat the various types of abuse they get. To actually configure my app, I had to hack together a Postfix relay. In another project, I had a static site which had a contact form, but my free Formspree account was…

Hi HN, I built Mephisto because I was frustrated with the current state of disposable email services—most are riddled with intrusive ads, trackers, and captchas. I wanted a tool that felt like a proper developer utility rather than a spam farm. The stack is React, Vite, and Tailwind. Key architectural decisions: 1. Volatile Memory: The backend writes nothing to disk. Once a session terminates, the data is irretrievable. 2. Client-Side Entropy: The password generator runs locally in the browser; keys are never sent to the server. 3. PWA: It's installable and designed for low latency using…

Built this after getting frustrated with the paying to a google for email. Now running it for 1 months in production. What it does: - Full SMTP server (inbound/outbound, DKIM signing, SPF/DMARC checking) - IMAP with IDLE support - CalDAV/CardDAV (replace Google Calendar/Contacts) - Web admin panel with Prometheus metrics - Greylisting for spam prevention - Auto-discovery (mail clients configure themselves) - Audit logging for compliance What it doesn't do: - Webmail (use Roundcube, etc.) - ML-based spam filtering (greylisting + basic heuristics only) - Clustering/HA
