I’m an indie maker, just like many of you. A few months back, I launched a product on one of the big platforms, and... nothing. It got buried under dozens of other launches within hours. All that work, all that excitement is gone in the blink of an eye. No one even saw it. It stung. I wasn’t mad, well, maybe a little but mostly, I just felt invisible. The truth is, indie makers like me don’t have big teams or budgets to fight for visibility. We rely on genuine support and connections. I couldn’t stop thinking about how many great ideas never get the attention they deserve because they’re…

Hi HN, I recently noticed a recurring visual artifact in the "Most Replayed" heatmap on the YouTube player. The highest peaks were always surrounded by two dips. I got curious about why they were there, so I decided to reverse engineer the feature to find out. This post documents the deep dive. It starts with a system design recreation, reverse engineering the rendering code, and ends with the mathematics. This is also my first attempt at writing an interactive article. I would love to hear your thoughts on the investigation and the format.

I created this chrome extension for myself where I track my own behavior locally and recommend myself content from platforms I want content from (youtube/twitter/quora/etc) in a feed. I made it public just in case anyone else was interested. I would rather have control over my own algorithm and own the data. Also, it gives me flexibility. Turns out I do like these feeds just not when I don't own it haha. Let me know what you think of my implementation?

Scriptmine▲86I built this for myself. I make videos, and my biggest bottleneck is figuring out what to say to my audience without staring at a blank page. So I built Scriptmine: a tool that listens to Reddit conversations in my niche, finds high-signal topics, and turns them into scripts. How it works: - Track subreddits and discussions relevant to a niche - Rank topics by engagement/momentum - Generate a hook/body/CTA draft in a chosen voice/format

This is an web audio experiment I've been wanting to do for a long time. Basically an ambient music composition, but all the sound elements are laid out in space, and that musical space can be explored freely. It's definitely inspired by in-world music that sometimes appears in games. I basically took that concept, keeping the music aspect, and dropping the entire "game" aspect. I also turned it into a more "traditional" non-interactive album, but since I started with code, why not program the whole thing? Had a blast making the entire album from code, the complete source for the album is…

VoteVid▲106Hey, I am Victor, a french student. I was tired of getting really bad recommandations from the algorithm, always the same videos, same topics. So I created a community-driven recommandation tool, with upvotes like Product Hunt or Hacker News. Looking for something to watch or want to share something you liked? Feel free to check the site, it's free, no account needed (unless you want to share or upvote a video).

I built Yourabbit.com — a site that curates hand-picked YouTube rabbit holes grouped by themes like quirky psychology, obscure tech, weird facts, and binge-worthy oddities. It’s not driven by the YouTube algorithm — every collection is themed and curated manually (for now), with a backend I’m automating to fetch and organize new rabbit holes daily. Built as a hybrid Astro + Next.js project, optimized for static generation and speed. I’m also pairing videos with custom summaries and commentary (using AI), and would love feedback from the HN crowd on: Content model (too wide? not specific…

GitRanks▲127Hi HN, I built GitRanks because I’ve always wanted a clear, fun way to see how my open-source work compares - both globally and right here at home. The app pulls in GitHub data to give every developer an at-a-glance “scorecard”, then rolls those into live leaderboards so you can: - Track rankings by stars, contributions and followers - Filter worldwide vs. your own country - Refresh daily - no waiting weeks to see your progress - Discover rising devs you’ve never heard of and follow their work Tech Stack: - Back: MongoDB | NestJS | BullMQ | GraphQL - Front: Next.js | Tailwind | Shadcn Data:…

I built Watchlist to solve a problem that's been nagging at me (and I suspect many others): YouTube's addictive nature and its impact on productivity. The Problem: YouTube is an incredible source of knowledge, but its homepage is an unending scroll of rabbit holes. The algorithm is designed to maximize watch time, often at the expense of our intentions and productivity. I found myself wasting hours, jumping from video to video, and then blaming myself for the lack of self-control. The Solution: Watchlist! Watchlist is essentially YouTube playlists on steroids. Here's how it works: 1. Create…

Claim.Watch▲21Today I received the official confirmation: Claim Watch just won the Best Product Award at the Half Baked x Bolt Founder Hackathon. There were 20,000+ participants globally. I made the TOP 5, and then 130,000 people voted for Claim Watch to win first place ($7,500 prize). First-week impact: 1,000+ active users 1,000+ settlements identified $800k+ recovered for people I built this during the hackathon, and now it seems to be turning into a real product. Happy to answer questions about the tech, stack, or how the system works.

TinMute▲7this is a simple CRUD app that I built with supabase and bolt dot new. (I probably messed up somewhere) inspired by: a "fitness" influencer spreading dangerous and false information on youtube. he had thumbnails of attractive women to lure in viewers, and if the viewers actually implement what he is doing, it could be seriously detrimental to their health.

Former investigative reporter turned developer. I built a simple breaking-news monitor because tracking events across platforms is a mess now that Twitter’s unreliable. Bluesky is the backbone (a fraction of twitter, but still lots of journalists and OSINT folks), plus RSS, Telegram, Reddit, YouTube and Mastodon. Everything is one chronological feed with no algorithm, clear source labels, and lightweight activity detection when a region spikes above baseline (frequency math, not LLMs). But we do have a (hopefully non-obtrusive) AI-generated recent/post summary. Been building for a…

Recently there were some changes to the Twitter algorithm and one of the most important ones was boosting video content even more in the feed, which got me thinking: "Why shouldn't we benefit from the algo changes and get a boost every time we are sharing some visuals?" So I spent the weekend building a tool that: - Turns your images into videos - Has 30 beautiful animated gradients that we can pick from - Is completely FREE I'd love to know your thoughts about it!
