For the past few months, I've been working on a website that answers two different questions: - Where in my city have the best travel times to all the things and people I care about? - Given a listing, how far is it from all the things and people I care about? I wrote a tool in Python that finds the school district associated with any given street address in the United States. Here’s how it works: An address corresponds to a single point on the map. The U.S Census Bureau has a geocoder that converts an address to latitude and longitude coordinates. School district boundaries can be represented as polygons on the map. The National Center for Education Statistics (NECS) has geographic data on school district boundaries. Once we determine which polygon the point resides in, we know the school district.

We're a small team of 3 engineers, and wanted to make a better way to look for for properties online. Traditional portals (esp. outside of US) are just a bit rubbish for doing anything other than basic searching. So we've: - Created a crawler that reads through estate agents websites to find homes for sale - Parses that through a series of LLMs and other models to understand each home in depth (e.g. floor type, location, total sqft) - Parses every photo through an embeddings vector space so that people can search for whatever they want. I built this product last year when my parents found a unit with 1.3m land value for sale for 825k. Similar properties have already sold for land value in the area when the whole block was sold to developers. I came up with this idea when I was looking to move to London with a friend. I quickly learned how frustrating it is to trial-and-error housing options for days on end, just to be denied after days of searching due to some grotesque counteroffer.
