Hi everyone, I appreciate that HN is probably not my target audience but I just recently launched my own video training course on Windows 10 for beginners and non-techies and would love to get some brutally-honest but constructive feedback from the HN community (e.g. are the course videos too long, too boring, too techie, too pointless etc?). https://www.WindowsKnowHow.com There are around 10 sample videos available for free on the homepage, but you can also sign up for a free 7-day trial (no credit card required) and gain access to the entire course (60 videos) by signing up here:…

Seven years in the making (I admit that I did get a kid at some point which slowed down progress and brought it to a halt quite a few times), I decided to finaly release it, with a rather drastic change to the now (I believe) generous licensing model. Unlike current major players in this field, I decided to go with uncrippled, free version for commercial use for corps with up to 1M USD ARR. I poured my heart and soul into this, not because I was looking for financial success, but because I felt it just had to be done, given the price hikes wherever you look today. While my wife and kid were…

My startup, Interstate (http://interstateapp.com) has just launched a new version (v4). The new version has brought a lot of new features and tons of UI/code/existing feature improvements (a full rundown of all the major changes can be found on our blog: http://blog.interstateapp.com/post/4416998498/major-roadworks-on-interstate). For those who have never heard of us before, Interstate provides developers and businesses alike a way to plan and share their development progress using roadmaps. If anyone has any feedback or would just like an invite then please do post! :)

I’ve spent the last ~2 years building a C/C++ IDE for Windows entirely in C99. My goal was to eliminate the bloat of the modern Visual Studio environment keeping its core features. Key Technical Highlights: Zero Dependencies: Just the Windows API Performance: Starts in 0.1ms on a twelve year old machine. It handles projects with 500k+ lines without UI lag or indexing stutters. Integrated Tools: Includes a custom-built debugger, profiler, and Intellisense engine designed for speed. Portability: It’s a single executable. No installer required. I built this because I was tired of waiting…

Built a simple web app that tells you which open-source LLMs will work on your hardware. It auto-detects your specs, shows compatible models from Hugging Face, gives realistic performance estimates (tokens/sec), and recommends quantization settings. You can also manually input specs to see "what if I upgraded my RAM?" Made this after wasting time downloading giant models only to find they crawled on my hardware. Hope it saves you some frustration!

Announcement: https://yzena.com/2024/04/rig-24.04.00-has-been-released/ Okay, it's not zero dependency, but it does only need a C99 compiler and some way to run a command. (C11 preferred, though.) Anyway, after more than three years of work, Rig is finally ready because it can build itself on non-Windows platforms. (Windows support only needs to figure out how to access the compiler.) Rig's website: https://rigbuild.dev/ That website has the docs as well, but for anyone who can contact me [1], feel free to do so if the docs are not sufficient for…

Title says all that needs to said about it, admittedly it is stupid to "copy" any Windows feature in Linux but here we are...it is not exactly made for use by extensive audience but just a rough work of it would love any suggestion/critique on it ...

I've been working on this for a few months since I got my Surface RT, and realized there wasn't a solid gtalk/gchat app. It's a C#/XAML app, and I ended up writing my own XMPP stack on-top of raw sockets since there wasn't a good open source one available (that would run in RT). I'll open source my XMPP library on GitHub shortly once I've cleaned it up a bit. Check it out! This is my first personal Windows 8 app (I've worked on a couple during my day job) with the goal being a way for me use GitHub issues as a small Kanban Board as well as just generally managing issues. It's been a reasonably pain free experience building the app and would love to know what you all think and suggestions for the future. Built this as a guide for users of my hosting service. Everything here was run on a real instance. The Mesa/LLVM dependency is genuinely painful on a 1GB disk, and I couldn't find a way around it. WindowMaker won the window manager battle purely on dependency chain cleanliness; it pulls in no GTK, no Python, no audio stack. Happy to answer questions about any of the choices made. Screenshots at the end.

Hi all, 1995 was a simpler time. There was no react, SSR, component libraries, and developers only had 4MB of RAM to work with. If you ask me, UIs have only gone downhill since then. So I created windows95jobs.com so people can experience the joy of simpler software while looking for a new SWE job. Repo: https://github.com/KyleMoore1/Win95Jobs (Built with react lol)
