Hi HN community! We want to share AI-town, a deployable starter kit for building and customizing your own version of AI simulation - a virtual town where AI characters live, chat and socialize. Inspired by great work from the Stanford Generative Agent paper (https://arxiv.org/abs/2304.03442). A few features: - Includes a convex.dev backed server-side game engine that handles global state - Multiplayer ready. Deployment ready - 100% Typescript - Easily customizable. You can fork it, change character memories, add new sprites/tiles and you have a custom AI simulation…

Smallville can be used to create NPCs with the same level of realism as human players without having to pre-program interactions. The agents store and retrieve past memories which they use to create plans so they can decide where to move, what to say, and how to react to observations. Agents are also capable of interacting with the world around them to change the state of objects on their own. This project was intended to make it easy for anyone to create custom simulations and my attempt to recreate Generative Agents: Interactive Simulacra of Human Behavior. I’ve been working on Smallville…

Hey! I built this system to humanize NPCs by giving them emotions using Rust and ML. The system provides emotion coordinates (based on Russell's circumplex model) from text input or actions, with persistent emotional memory per entity. Think NPCs that remember how they feel about specific players or events. I pre-trained a DistilBERT model on ~1k video game dialogues (Skyrim, Cyberpunk, etc.) and plan to extract and evaluate 100k+ dialogues soon. However studio/team can manually add dialogues to enrich their own dataset. The matrix doesn't generate dialogue, it only analyzes content.…

    1. In the US, about 1/5 children are hospitalized each year that don’t have a caregiver. Caregiver such as play therapists and parents’ stress can also affect children's emotions. 2. Not everyone is good at making friends and not everyone has a BFF to talk to. Imagine you're having a hard time in life or at work, and you can't tell your parents or friends. So, we built an open-source project Starmoon and are using affordable hardware components to bring AI characters to real-word objects like toys and plushies to help people emotional growth. We believe this is a complement tool and it…

ChatCBT is an AI-powered cognitive behavioral therapist for your local Obsidian notes. You have the choice to use OpenAI, or a 100% local model with Ollama for total data privacy. When you're done with your conversation, ChatCBT can automatically summarize the chat into a table listing your negative beliefs, emotions, categories of negative thinking, and reframed thoughts. This way you can start to recognize patterns in your thinking and begin to rewire your reactions to disturbing circumstances. Conversations are stored in markdown files on your local machine, ensuring privacy and…

Hey HN, I’m a dev and a dad to a 10-year-old. I built this because I caught my daughter using ChatGPT to do her history homework. She wasn't learning; she was just acting as a "middleware" between the AI and the paper. The Backstory: I realized the problem isn't the AI—it's the zero-friction answers. Most "AI for kids" apps are just "parrots"—they mimic intelligence by repeating patterns. What’s Different: Qurio is a "Bicycle" for the mind. It treats the child like a future "Architect" rather than a "Junior Executor." Technically, it wraps an LLM in a strict "Socratic Loop." It detects…

I saw this app youlearn.ai on YC and thought of building it. They are claiming to have 1M+ users with just one feature which is to convert your learning material into summaries, quizzes etc. I gave this a shot and cloned almost most of the features in just 9+ hours of continous vibe coding (with 20% manual though). Now I'm selling this on mvp marketplace. Might probably open source it in future or give it free.

Hello everyone! I'm excited to announce the launch of Astrocyte, a web app that allows you to create and interact with 3D AI characters. Whether it's video game heroes, anime characters, political figures, or even that obscure NPC from your favorite RPG, you can bring them to life and have a chat with them on Astrocyte! Many users have already begun crafting their own characters on Astrocyte, and the conversations have been incredibly entertaining. I would be thrilled if you could give it a try and share your honest feedback. Thank you!

I made this experimental art project/game that's an LLM chat assistant, but where you're the AI. I wanted people to get a visceral sense of what it's like to answer the kinds of things that people prompt their chatbots day in and day out. If you're interested, I wrote up some more info on how I made it, including how the "user" prompts are generated with an eye for realism: https://bethechatbot.com/about Hope you enjoy it! I'd love to hear people's takeaways.

Hey HN, My team is open-sourcing the inference stack and fined-tuned models we use to create LLM-powered NPCs: https://github.com/GigaxGames/gigax The generative agents paper [1] pioneered the idea of prompting LLMs to create autonomous NPCs. But existing implementations require multiple calls to an LLM to make the agent plan its day, chat with people, and interact with its environment [2]. Our approach allows NPCs to be stepped at runtime with a single pass on consumer-grade hardware, with reasonable latency. To achieve this, we've fine-tuned open-source LLMs [3] to…
