24 alternatives to NTP diag tool, as is Ping for ICMP
I’ve released rkik v1.10, a lean Rust tool to inspect NTP servers, compare offsets/RTTs, and optionally perform a one-shot system clock sync on Unix. Repo: https://github.com/aguacero7/rkik For those who dont know what it does: - Probe a single NTP server or compare multiple in one shot - Text / Simple / JSON outputs for humans or scripts - Fractional timing controls: sub-second --interval and --timeout (e.g., 0.1, 0.25) - Optional one-shot sync to “server UTC + half RTT” (Unix only) - Dry-run mode to validate the sync workflow without touching the clock…

I've frequently found myself using [nvitop](https://github.com/XuehaiPan/nvitop) to diagnose GPU/CPU contention issues. The two best things about it are: - It's easy to install if I can access pip in the container - It makes a compelling screenshot (which helps me communicate with coworkers.) With those two lessons in mind: Here is Sping! Purpose: Help observe and diagnose latency issues at layer 4+ (TCP/HTTP/HTTPS) Two good things about it: - It's easy to install if you have pip. Hey all, wanted to share my recent weekend hack project. I wanted to improve upon the existing space for looking up information about IP addresses and ASNs. The backend is written in Rust and pulls BGP data every 8 hours from the RIPE RIS project to build up a routing table and also adds geolocation information. The frontend is using React and Tailwind. Would love any feedback or suggestions on what to improve.

Hey HN, this is Will and David from Fortress (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41426998). We use a lot of async Rust internally, and created this library out of a need for an async-aware concurrent hashmap since there weren’t many available in the Rust ecosystem. Whirlwind is a sharded HashMap with a fully asynchronous API. Just as dashmap is a replacement for std::sync::RwLock, whirlwind aims to be a replacement for tokio::sync::RwLock. It has a similar design and performance characteristics to dashmap, but seems to perform better in read-heavy workloads with tokio's…

Hey folks! Shahar and Tal from Keep (https://www.keephq.dev) here! For the last few weeks we’ve been building Peeng and can now share our beta with you: https://www.peeng.sh. Peeng is the easiest and quickest “heartbeat” architecture we could think of. Just pick a subdomain (e.g. x.peeng.sh), configure an interval, an endpoint, and a payload, and hit that subdomain every <X (interval) seconds — If you won’t, Peeng will send an HTTP POST request to your configured endpoint. It’s Pingdom/Cronitor/heartbeat.sh free alternative (but the other way around and A LOT…

Howdy HN! I find myself testing my ping from time to time, especially when my internet seems wonky while WFH. It feels like there should be an easier way test my ping than puling up a terminal or a complex web app - especially when I'm on my phone or any other device that doesn't have a terminal. I figured I should be the change I wish to see in the world and created this super light ping test. I also created a latency monitoring solution (https://github.com/cjjeakle/network-monitor), feel free to clone and try it out! I know there are a lot more mature monitoring…

A server that replies to your pings faster than ever! Now with IPv6 support. Give it a minute and the response time will go down tremendously: ping ftlping.net On Windows, add an option not to stop after 4 pings: ping -t ftlping.net Works best on MacOS and FreeBSD. Not impressive on Windows but you can see something interesting if you run a packet analyser. Report issues here: https://github.com/plingbang/ftlping/issues The code may be published when my future self passes it to me.

Hi HN! I built RustNet, a Terminal UI based network monitor written in Rust that shows real-time connections with process identification and protocol detection. What may make it interesting: • Deep packet inspection for HTTP, HTTPS/TLS (with SNI), DNS, and QUIC protocol detection • Process identification using eBPF on Linux (experimental) and PKTAP on macOS which does also catch short-lived processes that polling procfs or lsof would miss • Multi-threaded packet processing with lock-free data structures for the UI • Cross-platform (Linux, macOS, Windows but process identification so far…

Hi HN - I’m the developer of PingStalker, a macOS utility I built to see what’s really happening on the LAN/WLAN. I live in the CLI, but when it came to discovery and monitoring, I found it limiting. So I built a GUI that brings my favorite tools together in one place. PingStalker started because I wanted to know if something on the network was scanning my machine. I also wanted quick access to core details—external IP, Wi-Fi data, and local topology. Then I wanted more: fast, reliable scans using ARP tables and ICMP. As a Wi-Fi engineer, I couldn’t stop there. I kept adding ways to…

Hi HN, Some misbehaving networks drop WireGuard packets either by accident or on purpose. Commonly the latter is done with simple DPI rules that block the handshake initiation [1], but it could be applied to other message types as well. We thought it would be great if there was tool for folks to use as a quick litmus test to see if this happening for them, without having to configure a client to send data through a random, functional WireGuard tunnel to an untrusted remote host. So we built probe.sh. How it works: - The probe.sh web app is an Elixir Phoenix app that spawns a few gen_udp…
