Products that do what Open Video Game Data: A new approach to evaluating games does
> Introduction Our idea is to offer an alternative to well-known sites like Metacritic and OpenCritic, but with a different approach. Instead of being a score aggregator, we will be a list aggregator. Metacritic brings together reviews from multiple review sites in one place, providing a final score of 0-100 based on a weighted arithmetic average, where some critics carry more weight than others. An alternative to Metacritic is OpenCritic, where all critics are weighted equally in the final average. However, both still work with numeric scores. > Why relying on scores can be problematic? -…

I scraped every Show HN from the last 12 months (41,301 posts) plus the full comment tree of every launch with 10+ comments, ~100k comment timestamps, all from the Algolia HN API. The median launch gets 2 points and 0 comments. For launches that do get traction, half the comments they'll ever get arrive within 7.2 hours and 90% within 26, and the top decile decays on the same clock as everyone else. Vote timestamps aren't public, so comment timing is the attention proxy; caveats are in the post. Everything reproduces from the repo with one command…

To get all this data first I tried using Google's Custom Search JSON API but it was too expensive that way, later I found a Kaggle dataset that has info about 110K games -including number of positive and negative reviews- so I used that instead. That amount should be almost half all the games Steam has, (according to an article on Backlinko, Steam's US library "contains 239,558 titles across all categories -including DLC, soundtracks, mods, etc.-"). SteamDB estimates that there must be around ~118,000 full games on Steam so far. In the process of scrapping I discovered that a few hundred of…

I'm building a manually curated catalog of games made by the HN community. I'v found several small gems while browsing HN, and it would've been quite difficult to find those games otherwise. So I've started a personal quest to collect those games into a public catalog with open source code and open data (everything is available on GitHub: https://github.com/labarilem/hn-games). Currently the collection has data up to the end of 2022. The plan, of course, is to gather all data up to today and then keep updating the collection. I've published this early version of the…

Most people like free things, some people like games. If you like 'm both then this might be something for you! I've made a website, a Discord bot, a Twitter bot, and a bunch of scrapers that roam the web to find free games out there. Just so that they can be found in one place by other people. I'm running this on my own server, so I'm curious as to how much traffic it can handle. The Discord and Twitter bots run on a fixed interval, so that shouldn't be much of a bottleneck. You can check it out online at: https://www.freegameisafreegame.com On Twitter at…

I have been in the position plenty of times where I am trying to get my game out there and there just aren't a lot of places to do it. Product Hunt is great... but it's a little restricting and difficult if you don't have an in to post. So I created Game Hunt. The goal is to help with the exposure of a game to people who might not otherwise get exposure to it. Here's the link http://gamehunt.co/ Any feedback would be great!

I wanted to learn more about RAG implementations, so I built something to solve the constant digging through manuals whenever we play a game. It's fairly simplistic, but actually has worked pretty well for some of these conflicts. Everythings Open Source on GitHub if you're curious (or have ideas), and I'd love to hear feedback from fellow boardgamers!

Hi HN, Our research team just released the best performing and most efficient reranker out there, and it's available now as an open weight model on HuggingFace. Reranker v2 was designed specifically for agentic RAG, supports instruction following (our v1 was the first to introduce this), and is multilingual. Along with this, we're also open source our eval set, which allows you to reproduce our benchmark results. By releasing these datasets, we are also advancing instruction-following reranking evaluation, where high-quality benchmarks are currently limited. Please give it a try and let us…

I had an idea for this concept for a while and decided to build a little website around it. It's kind of a silly idea but I'm really curious to see how it plays out. If you're a particularly curious person, be warned. By submitting a payment to the game, you get to see how many other people were curious enough to play. You will be ranked based on your payment amount, and get to discover some interesting insights about the game's dynamics. Hope you like it

Creator here. In a nutshell this extension is a "Like / Dislike" system but for website results. I miss the days of things like the YouTube dislike bar, where you can quickly assess if something is good or not. Currently sitting at ~90 users. To get it off the ground I've scraped the last year of HN to make a set of good links, and used a few content farm blacklists to make a set of bad links. Right now it's semi-useful and should only get better with time. There are some simple measures in place to prevent spam & abuse, but will cross that bridge if it ever comes. All feedback welcome!
