24 alternatives to Programming FTDI devices in Python

FTDI chips are frequently used as USB-to-serial adaptors, but the newer devices have the ability to drive more complex protocols such as SPI and I2C. I like to use Python when first experimenting with new PC hardware, and there are some Python libraries for interfacing to FTDI chips, but I couldn&#0

This resource provides step-by-step guidance for programming FTDI chips using Python, demonstrating how to work with USB-to-serial adapters and more complex protocols like SPI and I2C. It targets hardware developers… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. Programming FTDI devices in Python launched in 2018; newer entries below may have overtaken it.

Hi everyone, I built PyXL — a hardware processor that executes a custom assembly generated from Python programs, without using a traditional interpreter or virtual machine. It compiles Python -> CPython Bytecode -> Instruction set designed for direct hardware execution. I’m sharing an early benchmark: a GPIO test where PyXL achieves a 480ns round-trip toggle — compared to 14-25 micro seconds on a MicroPython Pyboard - even though PyXL runs at a lower clock (100MHz vs. 168MHz). The design is stack-based, fully pipelined, and preserves Python's dynamic typing without static type restrictions.…

I am proud to present my solo hobby project NAND. This year-long undertaking follows the completed Nand to Tetris course, but ported to the web with its own runtime, user interface, and IDE. Using the "Load example program" selector, you can try out some programs I wrote on NAND's emulated hardware such as 2048, a genetic algorithm, and a manual stack overflow to corrupt the screen. Check out NAND at https://nand.arhan.sh Additionally, I've authored an extensive writeup about the project. Read about it on the GitHub repository's readme.

Hello HN, I'm releasing Hyperdiv (https://hyperdiv.io), a framework for rapidly developing reactive browser UIs in Python, with immediate-mode syntax and using Shoelace (https://shoelace.style) as its built-in component system. This short coding video will give you a good idea of what it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XJKfxaqvGE I wrote a brief article about the motivation and approach: https://hyperdiv.io/intro.html Hyperdiv doesn't aim to compete with serious full-stack frameworks. The core aim was to make it easy and fast to…

Hi all! A little background: I've been working on natto.dev, a spatial environment for JavaScript. I'm really excited about new interfaces for code (leveraging metaphors we're good at, spatial reasoning, making state visible, design tools, etc). With all the buzz around PyScript, I discovered Pyodide and got it working inside natto. This Python version is a stripped down version of https://natto.dev (eg interactive outputs, multiplayer) so please check that out if this interests you. I'm excited to share this spatial environment for Python. Imagine Jupyter cells arranged on a 2D…

I built Copapy as an experiment: Can Python be used for hard real-time systems? Instead of an interpreter or JIT, Copapy builds a computation graph by tracing Python code and uses a custom copy-and-patch compiler. The result is very fast native code with no GC, no syscalls, and no memory allocations at runtime. The copy-and-patch compiler currently supports x86_64 as well as 32- and 64-bit ARM. It comes as small Python package with no other dependencies - no cross-compiler, nothing except Python. The current focus is on robotics and control systems in general. This project is early but…

I built a tiny 8-bit CPU simulator in Python to better understand how computers work at a low level. It visualizes registers, memory, and instructions in real-time, so you can actually see each operation as it happens. You can write simple assembly code and watch how the CPU executes it step by step. The project is mainly for learning and experimentation, but I’d love feedback or ideas for improvement.

I modified my terminal Jupyter client, euporie [1], to run using pyodide in the browser. It's akin to JupyterLite, providing a temporary online Python notebook environment without the need to install any Python packages. It's potentially useful if you need to do a bit of quick interactive work in Python, but don't have the environment set up ready to do so. Since actual jupyter kernels can't run in pyodide (they run as subprocesses and communicate over ZMQ), it uses an in-process Python kernel which runs on the same interpreter as the application itself. Notebooks and files can be saved…

Hi HN — I built FlashRecord, a tiny (≈2MB) Python-native CLI tool for screenshots and GIF recordings aimed at developers who want automation-friendly, scriptable screen capture without a GUI. ### What it is - CLI-first and importable (import flashrecord) so you can plug it into scripts, tests, CI pipelines, or docs generation. - Outputs GIFs (and screenshots) with a pure-Pillow/NumPy implementation of a CWAM-inspired compression pipeline (multi-scale saliency, temporal subsampling, adaptive scaling). - Cross-platform (Windows/macOS/Linux), zero-config defaults, and…

Hello all, Very excited to share this project with you all! Panoptisch scans your Python file or module to find it's imports (aka dependencies) and recursively does so for all dependencies and sub-dependencies. It then generates a dependency tree in JSON for you to parse and enforce import policies. Supply chain attacks are no joke, and this is one way to transparently analyze your dependencies to see if any malicious imports are taking place. For example, your yaml parser, nor it's sub-dependencies should import socket, or sys. Panoptisch is in early stages, with known limitations (for…

I needed to remote control a program (and read it’s output) while that tool should still be fully interactive for the user. Obviously there are things like tmux and more but they emulate an entire terminal. This is simpler in that it just sets up a pty and basic pipes or files to send stuff in and read from it.

I’m sure many of you are familiar, but there’s a treacherous gap between finding (or building) a model that works in PyTorch, and getting that deployed into your application, especially in consumer-facing applications. I’ve been very interested in solving this problem with a great developer experience. Over time, I gradually realized that the highest-impact thing to have was a way to go from existing Python code to a self-contained native binary—in other words, a Python compiler. I was already pretty familiar with a successful attempt: when Apple introduced armv8 on the iPhone 5s, they…

This is an upgrade of a tool I created 15 years ago in Python to learn OOP and solve some inadequacies in the HDR stacking tools I could find at the time. The problem was, none of them were really "batch friendly". None of them properly preserved the metadata I wanted them to stuff into the output file. There were probably some other reasons also, I just can't remember them now. It got the job done, but was very slow. Python was what I knew at the time and even with NumPy, I was limited in the speed I could squeeze out of it. (I also made some very specific, conscious, architectural choices…
