Repainting the iconic IKEA PS 2014 lamp into the Deathstar from Star Wars has been a popular IKEA hack for quite some time. This variant additionally replaces the manual, rope-operated mechanism to open and close the lamp with a remote-controlled motor. The firmware is based on ESPHome, and its excellent Home Assistant integration enables one to implement higher-level features, like a "sundial" where the aperture of the Deathstar follows the sun elevation throughout the day (see the timelapse video). That said, I will not consider this project as complete until the Imperial March can be…

Krita's v4.2+ RGBA brushtips let you paint with dimensionality, and it's a technology that Photoshop doesn't have (≖‿ゝ≖) It lets the creator do things like emulating light direction, making brushstrokes look 3D. I used them to make a set of metallic brushes. If there are any FOSS artists around, feel free to test them out. (p.s. Yes, I am learning Github so I probably made repository mistakes - apologies in advance lol)

Hi all, excited to share our latest work, OK-Robot, which is an open and modular framework to perform navigation and manipulation with a robot assistant in practically any homes without having to teach the robot anything new! You can simply unbox the target robot, install OK-Robot, give it a "scan" (think a 60 second iPhone video), and start asking the robot to move arbitrary things from A to B. We already tested it out in 10 home environments in New York city, and one environment each in Pittsburgh and Fremont. We based everything off of the current best machine learning models, and so…

Virtual Sun▲101We built CircadianLab, a free in-browser tool for lighting design. It uses webGPU shaders to calculate melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance (mel-EDI, formerly EML, relevant for circadian rhythm and WELL v2 compliance), photopic illuminance, UGR glare per CIE 117, and actual daylight through windows and skylights. It has a database of 400,000+ IES files from 81 lighting manufacturers and supports easy sharing of scenes/configs with other people. Daylight uses the NREL Solar Position Algorithm and a Perez clear / intermediate / overcast sky model, mixed into the same…
