Products that do what Retrocomputing with Clash: Haskell for FPGA Hardware Design does

The video demo runs a 7b Model on a normal gaming GPU. I think it already works quite well (accounting for the limited hardware power). :)

Hi HN! I'm Fischer, and I'm super stoked to share a project that I've been working on for a little over a year: Manta, an open-source, cross-platform, vendor-independent tool for debugging and rapid prototyping with FPGAs. This was originally my Master's Thesis at MIT, where I developed it for our course on FPGA design. We needed an alternative to vendor debugging tools, which only supported x86 machines running Windows or Linux. We were able to patch in macOS support with VMs, but as more students came bringing ARM-based devices, we needed a new tool. So I developed this. It's called Manta,…

I replicated David Ng's RYS method (https://dnhkng.github.io/posts/rys/) on consumer AMD GPUs (RX 7900 XT + RX 6950 XT) and found something I didn't expect. Transformers appear to have discrete "reasoning circuits" — contiguous blocks of 3-4 layers that act as indivisible cognitive units. Duplicate the right block and the model runs its reasoning pipeline twice. No weights change. No training. The model just thinks longer. The results on standard benchmarks (lm-evaluation-harness, n=50): Devstral-24B, layers 12-14 duplicated once: - BBH Logical Deduction: 0.22 → 0.76…

Hi HN! I've been working on the fuse programming language, it's a statically typed purely functional language with higher-kinder types and ad-hoc polymorphism. It compiles to the GRIN whole-program optimizer, producing LLVM-generated native code. Fuse supports ADTs, Generics, Type Methods, Traits, Pattern matching etc. all in a functional style with no mutations. I’ve been developing the language for 5 years, with code written in Scala. I’ve started coding the language from the base of System F that was implemented as part of the book: Types and Programming Languages (tapl). And then…

The core question: how did HP's scientific calculators actually work at the gate level? That rabbit hole led to building one from scratch. The architectural decision everything else follows from: a decimal calculator should store numbers as BCD — one decimal digit per 4-bit nibble. A standard byte-oriented CPU (Z80, 6502) fights that layout constantly. So I designed a small custom CPU in Verilog where 4 bits is the natural data width and memory is nibble addressable. What the project covers: - Custom CPU: Harvard architecture, 12-bit ISA, 8-state execution FSM, hardware stack guard with a…

I have been working on this game somewhat sparsely for the past three years or so. However, it is still in a very early stage, and there is a lot of work to do. One of my friends encouraged me to post about it here, since he felt people might find interesting how I don’t use any libraries for it. The game can be played on a browser by virtue of WebAssembly. There are native ports using either MiniFB or SDL2, but you have to build those yourself. I decided to write the game in C because I feel like it is a simple language that a lot of people can understand well enough, and I didn’t think I…

I've been exploring the (not so=) amazing potential of AI in coding and have compiled a list of tools. From AI-powered IDEs to code generators, this resource is my contribution to the community. I'm still on the fence about including txt2sql projects, as their functionality seems too basic to me. And I'm personally maintaining this, so your feedback is wellcome.

This is rather a mature project. It began out of curiosity: I wanted to test if Haskell FFI was powerful and expressive enough to interconnect C and Haskell code flawlessly. Particularly, if C strings generated inside Nginx can be shared within Haskell code and what must be done to respect their lifetimes etc. Recently, I released version 3.2.0 with revamped README (with a lot of examples) and a new approach to building Haskell handlers using the modernized cabal v2-build for dependencies.

Hi, everyone! I built SHDL (Simple Hardware Description Language) as an experiment in stripping hardware description down to its absolute fundamentals. In SHDL, there are no arithmetic operators, no implicit bit widths, and no high-level constructs. You build everything explicitly from logic gates and wires, and then compose larger components hierarchically. The goal is not synthesis or performance, but understanding: what digital systems actually look like when abstractions are removed. SHDL is accompanied by PySHDL, a Python interface that lets you load circuits, poke inputs, step the…

Merry Christmas, everyone! Now you can compile Haskell code on Windows 11 ARM. It will run full speed if you use UTM/QEmu on Apple silicon. :-) It's a very draft version, but it works well. Any ideas?
