Storm history + roof age maps for roofing contractors

I've been working on this project for about 4 years. It began as terrain only because world wide elevation data was publicly available. I then added buildings from OpenStreetMap (crowd sourced) and more recently from Overture Maps data. Some computer vision/machine learning advancements [1] in the past few years have made it possible to estimate tree canopy heights using satellite imagery alone making it possible to finally add trees to the map. The data isn't perfect, but it's within +/- 3 meters of so. Good enough to give a general idea for any location on Earth. Happy to answer…

For the past few months, I've been working on a website that answers two different questions: - Where in my city have the best travel times to all the things and people I care about? - Given a listing, how far is it from all the things and people I care about? Personally this was fueled by my own frustrations when I was apartment hunting in NYC. I was frustrating to have to juggle so many Google Maps tabs when I was evaluating a listing, and it was also annoying to not have full confidence that I was even searching in the right places. I wanted to be close to work, a Trader Joe's, and a…

We're a small team of 3 engineers, and wanted to make a better way to look for for properties online. Traditional portals (esp. outside of US) are just a bit rubbish for doing anything other than basic searching. So we've: - Created a crawler that reads through estate agents websites to find homes for sale - Parses that through a series of LLMs and other models to understand each home in depth (e.g. floor type, location, total sqft) - Parses every photo through an embeddings vector space so that people can search for whatever they want. Hey HN. I'm a high schooler in Fremont, CA. Tuesday morning I got a county-wide AC Alert text telling everyone in Alameda County to prepare a go-bag for an East Bay Hills Red Flag Warning that starts tonight at 11 PM. The text went to ~half a million phones. The actual NWS warning polygon only covers East Bay Hills (NWS zone CAZ515). Most people who got the text don't need a go-bag tonight. Some in the hills don't realize how close they are. So I built this tool - https://redflag-check.info/ mit licensed public github -…

Basically was getting annoyed jumping between 5 different sites during this winter storm season, so I built "StormWatch". It's a no-fuss, mobile-friendly webpage (dashboard) that shows all the stuff I was looking for, but in one simple UI. Features: - Real-time NWS alerts with safety tips - Snow/ice/precip accumulation forecasts (+wind) - Dynamic preparation checklists based on your alerts - Supply calculator for your household size - Regional weather news It's free, no login required, works on any device. Just enter your ZIP.…

Hello HN, I live in northern part of USA where winters are snowy. Whenever I took long trips, I always wondered what the weather along the route is going to be. For those who live in northern USA, you know weather can change frequently, so when you're traveling matters a lot, not just the route. To solve this problem for myself, I built https://navimodo.com/. NaviModo calculates the route, and then checks weather along the route based on your start time, and displays weather along the route. Change start time, and the whole thing is recalculated. I am not expecting any…

Hi HN, I built an OSINT tool called Weather2Geo that helps locate where a screenshot was taken based on the weather widget data visible (e.g. temp, condition, and local time in the taskbar). People often post these without realizing how specific those values can be in combination. It works by comparing the given weather condition, temperature, and time against current data from thousands of cities. It’s timezone-aware, supports fuzzy matching, and groups results geographically to reduce noise. It’s most effective on recent screenshots, ideally taken within the last hour—since weather and…

We built Maptoolkit.org - a free, production-grade vector maps service built on OpenStreetMap and MapLibre. Map rendering and tile hosting have historically been either expensive (Google, Mapbox) or complex to maintain yourself. (Plus: Their maps are car-focused.) Our maps feature max data zoom 15, global hill-shading, 3D terrain, contour lines, water depths, and specialized styles (like Hiking, Cycling, Winter). No sign up or API keys required. You can use it like this: ``` const map = new maplibregl.Map({ container: 'map', style: 'https://styles.maptoolkit.org/summer.json',…

I miss Dark Sky, so I built my own weather app. Here's how GrayCloud works: * Raincast: minute-by-minute rain prediction and accumulation tracking for your exact location * Forecasts: 10 day forecasts use multiple high resolution sources and correct for bias at your location. * Alerts: rain starting, stopping, severe weather, daily summary and more * Widgets: home and lock screen widgets * Multi-platform: apple watch and mac apps I use NOAA and ECMWF models for core weather data and a custom model to compute rain accumulation and the next 60 minute radar movements. I also offer Apple…
