24 alternatives to SQLite Transaction Benchmarking Tool
I wanted to make my own evaluation of what kind of performance I could expect from SQLite on a server and investigate the experimental `BEGIN CONCURRENT` branch vs the inbuilt `DEFERRED` and `IMMEDIATE` behaviors. Explanatory blog post: https://reorchestrate.com/posts/sqlite-transactions/
SQLite Transaction Benchmarking Tool measures SQLite database performance under various transaction modes on server environments. It compares the built-in DEFERRED and IMMEDIATE transaction behaviors against an… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. https://github.com/ncruces/go-sqlite3 was doing poorly on this benchmark that was posted yesterday to HackerNews [1]. With the help of some pprof, I was able to trace it to a serious performance regression introduced two weeks ago, and come up with the fix (happy to field questions, if you're interested in the nitty gritty). It's not the fastest driver around, but it's no longer the slowest: comfortably middle of the pack. It's based on a WASM build of SQLite, and thanks to https://wazero.io doesn't need CGO. [1]:…

Hey! I'm Andrei. I got frustrated by how people tend to build overcomplicated backend systems, being "motivated" by big tech case studies and popular books. So, I started exploring lean architecture, and building my digital garden of ideas, approaches and data that align with this direction. Here I want to present one of the tools – Sizing tool for PostgreSQL. I've benchmarked PostgreSQL on different EC2 instances and disks, with different initial data sets to see performance that these instances can give you. And I've built a tool to visualize this data, which I welcome you to explore. So,…

I created a web page to compare different analytical databases (both self-managed and services, open-source and proprietary) on a realistic dataset. It contains 20+ databases, each with installation and data loading scripts. And they can be compared to each other on a set of 43 queries, by data load time or by storage size. There are switches to select different types of databases for comparison - for example, only MySQL compatible or PostgreSQL compatible. If you play with the switches, many interesting details will be uncovered. Full description:…

Hey HN. We’re Jay and Vadim from Highlight.io (https://highlight.io). We’re building an open source [1] monitoring platform for web applications. Today we’re excited to be sharing a performance tool we’ve been working on, which helps you inspect the latency of code execution from the client to the server. As engineers at past startups, we often had to debug slow queries, poor load times, inconsistent errors, etc... While tools like Jaegar [2] helped us inspect server-side performance, we had no way to tie user events to the traces we were inspecting. In other words, although we had…

My co-worker and I were debugging a SQL issue; having not seen SQL in two years, I embarrassed myself by confusing union vs. join. After this episode, I tried refreshing my SQL memory, but there are few websites that animate SQL for you. Most of them just have a series of images to help you visualize. There are a few tools that are quite good and robust (especially for large/complex use cases) but require installation and are too complex for my simple purpose. So, just created a small tool to help visualise SQL. Most of the animations are just my understanding of how SQL works. Would…

Hello HN! I'm building mvsqlite, a distributed variant of SQLite with MVCC transactions, that runs on FoundationDB. It is a drop-in replacement that just needs an `LD_PRELOAD` for existing applications using SQLite. I made this because Blueboat (https://github.com/losfair/blueboat) needs a native SQL interface to persistent data. Apparently, just providing a transactional key-value store isn’t enough - it is more easy and efficient to build complex business logic on an SQL database, and it seems necessary to bring a self-hostable distributed SQL DB onto the platform.…

Hi everyone! I wanted to share my analytics app with you. This project came from requirements to track certain very frequent events. I found that the cost to do it on a regular analytics product was much more than i was willing to pay. Secondly, I also wanted to use as few resources as possible. So I thought it may be a good idea to create something that may be useful for myself (and hopefully others). I have been able to track a great number of events with this using ~20 MB of storage and memory which is incredible. I have been really impressed by golang as a language and as an ecosystem…

I built a SQLite VFS in Rust that serves cold queries directly from S3 with sub-second performance, and often much faster. It’s called turbolite. It is experimental, buggy, and may corrupt data. I would not trust it with anything important yet. I wanted to explore whether object storage has gotten fast enough to support embedded databases over cloud storage. Filesystems reward tiny random reads and in-place mutation. S3 rewards fewer requests, bigger transfers, immutable objects, and aggressively parallel operations where bandwidth is often the real constraint. This was explicitly inspired…

Hi! As I was working on a side project, I noticed I wanted to use SQLite like a Document Database on the server. So I built Doculite. DocuLite lets you use SQLite like Firebase Firestore. It's written in Typescript and an adapter on top of sqlite3 and sqlite. Reasons: 1) Using an SQL Database meant having less flexibility and iterating slower. 2) Alternative, proven Document Databases only offered client/server support. 3) No network. Having SQLite server-side next to the application is extremely fast. 4) Replicating Firestore's API makes it easy to use. 5) Listeners and real-time…

My name is Weston Goodwin. I created a tool called SQL Simulator which allows you to do Dry Runs with your SQL Scripts. The reason I created the tool was because I wanted to verify that my SQL scripts did what I thought they would do without executing them against the database. It is similar in concept to Redgate SQL Clone or Windocs. If you are not familiar with these tools they make clones of your database. The key difference with SQL Simulator is, it only makes a clone of the database objects affected by your sql script, not the entire database. Nor does it copy the entire table (if your…

I am excited to announce the project I am working on: an advanced mobile app profiler for Android. Its primary purpose is to optimize app performance and make it faster. Additionally, it serves as an excellent debugging tool. The main distinction between existing tools, such as Perfetto and the Android Studio Profiler, is the ability to synchronize the trace with a video recording of your app. This allows you to see the app's UX alongside what's occurring within the app to identify what's causing slowdowns. Another key feature is the ability to click on any slice and view the cross-thread…

Hi HN - I’m Peter, here with Harry (devhawk), and we’re building DBOS Java, an open-source Java library for durable workflows, backed by Postgres. https://github.com/dbos-inc/dbos-transact-java Essentially, DBOS helps you write long-lived, reliable code that can survive failures, restarts, and crashes without losing state or duplicating work. As your workflows run, it checkpoints each step they take in a Postgres database. When a process stops (fails, restarts, or crashes), your program can recover from those checkpoints to restore its exact state and continue from where…

I got sick of the old software development loop: Change code -> Run tests -> wait -> wait some more -> look at failures. I decided to build a tool that will enable you to: Change code -> look at failures. No wait time, no explicit test running. Under the hood: - Runs the whole test suite and collects code coverage per test. - For each auto file save, analyzes the changes on the tests. - Runs changed tests in the background. - Display results, the loop time from change to test results is approx 250ms. Instead of: code -> alt+tab -> arrow up -> rerun all the tests -> wait ... -> test results…

We recently benchmarked AnuDB, a lightweight embedded database built on top of RocksDB, against SQLite on a Raspberry Pi. The performance difference, especially for parallel operations, was dramatic. SQLite is excellent for many embedded use cases — it’s simple, battle-tested, and extremely reliable. But it doesn't scale well when parallelism or concurrent writes are required. Benchi is a CLI tool for running benchmarks and collecting metrics. It's using Docker Compose to orchestrate the infrastructure and tools being benchmarked, making it repeatable and runnable on different machines. It allows you to run the same benchmark for different tools and compare the collected results. The repository contains a simple example. For a more elaborate example see how we use Benchi to compare data pipelines running on Conduit and Kafka Connect, two data streaming tools (still work in progress): https://github.com/ConduitIO/streaming-benchmarks
