Last weekend, I tried creating an original visualization of something on many minds in my home country the Netherlands: land use. Much of our discussion revolves around land use—housing crisis, sustainable farming, solar energy—it's all about the land. I wrote a tool in Python that finds the school district associated with any given street address in the United States. Here’s how it works: An address corresponds to a single point on the map. The U.S Census Bureau has a geocoder that converts an address to latitude and longitude coordinates. School district boundaries can be represented as polygons on the map. The National Center for Education Statistics (NECS) has geographic data on school district boundaries. Once we determine which polygon the point resides in, we know the school district.

We have another election coming up at the end of this month here in the Netherlands, and how we use our limited land is a hotly debated topic. Just a fun toy I wanted to make. I've been studying and playing around with language models lately and have always been intrigued by how words are processed by these models. I've been building a bunch of US geography tools/games/visualizations and thought folks on HN might like this one. There are also drive-time and bike-time tools available on the same page. For folks interested, all of the data comes from OpenStreetMap and the US Census at the moment - OSM for routing and points interest and the US Census for population data.
