I'm a multilingual reader (Catalan/Spanish/English/Italian), and I kept hitting the same wall: I'd hear about a book and have no way to know if it existed in my language. Turns out this is a genuinely unsolved problem. There's no single database that tracks which books have been translated into which languages. ISBN registries are fragmented by country. Open Library has great English coverage but gaps elsewhere. Wikidata has surprisingly rich translation data but it's locked behind SPARQL. Google Books is inconsistent across regions. Hey HN! I love finding new books to read on here. I wanted to gather the most mentioned books and recreate the serendipity of physical browsing. I scraped 20k comments from HN threads related to reading, extracted the references and opinions using GPT-4o mini, and visualised their embeddings as a map. - OpenAI's embeddings were processed using UMAP and HDBSCAN. Since I was young, I've loved anime, and over the years, manga has brought me joy, given me courage, and sparked excitement in my heart. Currently I’m reading 三体 (3 body problem), but one problem I've always had is it takes ages to look up words, and add them to Anki flashcards so I can remember them. 三体 is especially brutal with so much sci-fi vocab. So I dug into the academic research, tried many techniques myself, saw what worked, wrote a book for learners of any language and any level, and made it free without ads. Built an auditable AI (Bible) translation pipeline: Hebrew/Greek source packets -> verse JSON with notes rolling up to chapters, books, and testaments. Final texts compiled with metrics (TTR, n-grams). This is the first full-text example as far as I know (Gen Z bible doesn't count). There are hallucinations and issues, but the overall quality surprised me. LLMs have a lot of promise translating and rendering 'accessible' more ancient texts. The technology has a lot of benefit for the faithful, that I think is only beginning to be explored.

Last year, I wanted to learn a bit about how easy it would be to deploy a python app via web assembly to the browser and decided to make a wrapper around the amazing sqlglot by Toby Mao and the rest of the team. The tool lets you paste in Sql queries and translate them between the available sql dialects in sqlglot. It also gives you parse diagnostics and the ability to easily share queries via storing all the state in the url.
