Regular zstd compressed files consist of a single frame, meaning you have to start decompression at the beginning. The seekable format splits compressed data into a series of independent frames, each compressed individually, so that decompression of a section in the middle of an archive only requires zstd to decompress at most a frame's worth of extra data, instead of the entire archive. I wrote libcorrect in C in 2016 and wanted to revisit it in Rust. Instead of doing just a direct conversion, I went down the rabbit hole of making Rust's std::simd work for me. I ended up with a templated, generic Viterbi decoder for convolutional codes that dispatches the decode at runtime depending on which instruction sets are available. I'd like to share a little toy project of mine, a really simple image codec that can do lossy to full lossless image compression with complete scalability at a byte level granularity - you can compress an image just once, even fully losslessly if needed, and then get any lossy version possible by simply stopping decompression at any offset in the compressed data. This project is a little performance-optimization experiment focused on reducing the size of Go binary patches, which can be useful for quick incremental updates of live services. When a Go program grows by a few bytes through an incremental change, a bunch of related references and offsets throughout the compiled binary end up changing that makes general-purpose binary-diff encoders inefficient: `zstd --patch-from` produces a 530kb patch for a one-line change in a 30MB binary. bsdiff improves upon this (150KB patch) thanks to a delta compression algorithm that can handle relative offsets.…

I make a no-CGO Go SQLite driver, by compiling the amalgamation to Wasm, then loading the result with wazero (a CGO-free Wasm runtime). To compile SQLite, I use wasi-sdk, which uses wasi-libc, which is based on musl. It's been said that musl is slow(er than glibc), which is true, to a point. musl uses SWAR on a size_t to implement various functions in string.h. This is fine, except size_t is just 32-bit on Wasm. I found that implementing a few of those functions with Wasm SIMD128 can make them go around 4x faster. Other functions don't even use SWAR; redoing those can make them 16x faster.…

Hey y’all! About 7 years ago, I had this idea to write a JIT with an autogenerated backend for x86 based on the ISA specs. I sketched something out and then just kinda let it sit. I picked it up again a few weeks ago and made a complete-ish backend for both x86 and ARM64. My partner reviews a lot of P&IDs (piping and instrumentation diagrams) and the adjacent files involved (excel, docx, pdfs, acd/l5x, etc). In his company, these are usually done in Bluebeam. zroar is a ground-up implementation of Roaring Bitmaps data structure in Zig. zroar stores both the keys and (array, bitmap) containers in a single flat byte buffer, making the in-memory representation equal to the on-disk or over-the-network representation, eliminating the serialization/deserialization step entirely.
