24 alternatives to 6cy – Experimental streaming archive format with per-block codecs
Hi HN, I’ve been experimenting with archive format design and built 6cy as a research project. The goal is not to replace zip/7z, but to explore: • block-level codec polymorphism (different compression per block) • streaming-first layout (no global seek required) • better crash recovery characteristics • plugin-based architecture so proprietary codecs can exist without changing the format Right now this is an experimental v0.x format. The specification may still change and compatibility is not guaranteed yet. I’m mainly looking for feedback on the format design rather than performance…

While building a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system, I was frustrated by my vector database consuming 8GB RAM just to search my own PDFs. After incurring $150 in cloud costs, I had an unconventional idea: what if I encoded my documents into video frames? The concept sounded absurd—storing text in video? But modern video codecs have been optimized for compression over decades. So, I converted text into QR codes, then encoded those as video frames, letting H.264/H.265 handle the compression. The results were surprising. 10,000 PDFs compressed down to a 1.4GB video file. Search…

I built an experiment that uses an overfitted transformer and arithmetic coding to compress individual files. Instead of training the model to generalize, I train a 900KB transformer to memorize a single file and predict the next byte. Those predictions are fed into an arithmetic coder to produce the compressed output. On a 100MB NYC taxi CSV, it compresses to about 7MB (~0.5 bits/byte). On a 100MB slice of enwik9, it compresses to about 21MB (~1.68 bits/byte). It's pretty slow right now (roughly 20–30 minutes of training and 45 minutes each for compression and decompression on my…

Hello, I would like to share a Rust implementation of the Zstandard seekable format I've been working on. Regular zstd compressed files consist of a single frame, meaning you have to start decompression at the beginning. The seekable format splits compressed data into a series of independent frames, each compressed individually, so that decompression of a section in the middle of an archive only requires zstd to decompress at most a frame's worth of extra data, instead of the entire archive. I started working with the seekable format because I wanted to resume downloads of big zstd…

Hi HN, As many of you already know, Google has discontinued their coding competitions and is shutting down the competitions website. Before it's gone forever, I've scraped everything I could from their website and set up my own archive. (Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with Google besides participating in these contests years ago) While the initial version was ready back in March, today I'm rolling out big and hopefully the final update, so this might be a good time to share it with the HN community. Everything is static HTML and SQLite archives (with a very minimal backend to serve files…

Hello HN, author here. I built ZXC, a lossless compression library designed specifically for "Write Once, Read Many" scenarios (Game assets, Firmware, App bundles). The Concept: Standard real-time codecs (LZ4, Snappy) are designed for symmetry. ZXC explores an asymmetric approach: it spends significantly more CPU cycles at compression time to generate a bitstream specifically structured for modern, wide-issue execution pipelines (maximizing Instruction Level Parallelism). Performance (Verified via lzbench integration): ZXC was merged into the official lzbench repository monday. ARM64 (Apple…

I've spent the last few months working on this codec. It has the following characteristics: - SOTA decompression throughput in its ratio class - Decent ratios (comparable to LZ4 at high effort levels) - Slow compression Most of the gains can be attributed to reducing branches and making decompression very friendly to out-of-order cores, by using a smart format. Results on the tarred Silesia corpus on Intel x86-64 follow: codec decode ratio encode misa77 -0 5219 MB/s 42.64% 54.5 MB/s misa77 -1 4274 MB/s 39.65% 51.2 MB/s lz4 2505 MB/s 47.59% 371 MB/s lz4hc -12…

RISC-V's compressed instruction (RVC) extension is intended as an add-on to the regular, 32-bit instruction set, not a replacement or competitor. Its designers intended RVC instructions to be expanded into regular 32-bit RV32I equivalents via a pre-decoder. What happens if we explicitly architect a RISC-V CPU to execute RVC instructions, and "mop up" any RV32I instructions that aren't convenient via a microcode layer? What architectural optimizations are unlocked as a result? "Minimax" is an experimental RISC-V implementation intended to establish if an RVC-optimized CPU is, in practice, any…

This is a long-running project that started as the proverbial need to scratch my own itch and then somehow evolved into a full-time job of the past 6 years. Link: https://bvckup2.com I thought I'd do a Show HN for two reasons. 1. I obviously want to show my baby to those who haven't seen it. Its primary purpose is to do very fast file replication. If you are familiar with "robocopy /mir" - same idea, but on steroids. Lots of them. It can be used for both mirroring and archiving backups, among other things. It is light, very small and it is really quite fast. Half of the…

Over the last few years, I've needed an easy way to quickly serialise and deserialise various network protocols safely and efficiently. Most of the libraries that existed at the time were either quite heavy, had less than stellar performance, or were an abstraction level above what I was looking for. I decided to put together my own class to do the job, starting with an easy, low-overhead way to move bytes in and out of arbitrary buffers. Along the way, it picked up useful bits and pieces, such as buffer structures and allocators that made the byte shuffling faster, often being able to do it…

Problem JSON/NDJSON is everywhere in data platforms, but compression usually breaks searchability. You either keep queryable raw stores (high I/O/egress) or compress into gz/zstd blobs (cheap to store, painful to probe). The “cloud tax” shows up as wasted reads. What I built (SEE — Semantic Entropy Encoding) A schema-aware, searchable compression codec for JSON that keeps exists/pos lookups fast while still compressing. Internals: structure-aware delta + dictionaries, a PageDir + mini-index to jump to relevant pages, and a tuned Bloom filter that skips ~99% of pages.…

Hi HN, I’m building SEE (Semantic Entropy Encoding): a searchable compression format for JSON/NDJSON. Goal: reduce the “data tax” (storage/egress) and “CPU tax” (decompress/parse) by keeping JSON searchable while compressed, with page-level random access. I just published a proof-first evaluation release: Offline DEMO ZIP (~10 min): prints compression ratios + skip rates + lookup latency (p50/p95/p99) DD pack: audit/repro evidence (decode mismatch=0, extended mismatch=0, audit PASS) Latest release:…

I'd like to share a little toy project of mine, a really simple image codec that can do lossy to full lossless image compression with complete scalability at a byte level granularity - you can compress an image just once, even fully losslessly if needed, and then get any lossy version possible by simply stopping decompression at any offset in the compressed data. This "encode onde, serve many" approach is especially interesting for providing downscaled low quality image previews (LQIP) in as tight a storage budget as possible, and then allowing seamless, transparent refinement as deemed…

My partner reviews a lot of P&IDs (piping and instrumentation diagrams) and the adjacent files involved (excel, docx, pdfs, acd/l5x, etc). In his company, these are usually done in Bluebeam. It's really hard to see the diff + keep track of all the revisions resulted by these iterations. They end up storing files like "rev3_final_redlined.pdf". We've been looking for something close to Github to do these reviews, but haven't found one easy enough for folks with no CLI experience to understand and use (happy to check out more tools if you know any). Most ZK proving systems are optimized for server-grade hardware with massive RAM. When scaling to industrial-sized traces (2^20+ rows), they often hit a "Memory Wall" where allocation and data movement become a larger bottleneck than the actual computation. I have been developing Hekate, a ZK engine written in Rust that utilizes a Zero-Copy streaming model and a hybrid tiled evaluator. To test its limits, I ran a head-to-head benchmark against Binius64 on an Apple M3 Max laptop using Keccak-256. The results highlight a significant architectural divergence: At 2^15 rows: Binius64 is faster…
