A Demo for a Strategy Game

This is something that I've been working on on-and-off in my spare time for the last few years. I started in 2020 during Covid trying to do a Mount and Blade style map in UE4, and it grew from there until where it is now - I would just add a feature, then another, until it came together. Since the start of the year I've really been trying to polish it some more. I've got the full thing planned for a Q3 25 release. Github release if you don't have Steam: https://github.com/joe-gibbs/fall-of-an-empire-release

A Demo for a Strategy Game launched on October 2, 2024 with 109 votes, #480 of 5,185 launches that month and more than 90% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 2 years on.

In plain words

A Demo for a Strategy Game is a Mount and Blade-inspired strategy title built in Unreal Engine 4. Players manage large-scale maps and engage in tactical gameplay. The project developed organically over several years with incremental feature additions. A full release is planned for Q3 2025, with a demo currently available on Steam and GitHub for players interested in early access to the evolving strategy experience.

In a crumbling realm, hold back collapse in this grand strategy epic. Fall of an Empire has you balance deadly politics, manage resources, and command battles to survive invasions and intrigue in a vast, Roman-inspired world.

The empire is dying. Survival is victory. Seize control of an ailing empire, clinging to echoes of its former glory. Unlike traditional grand strategy games of expansion and conquest, Fall of an Empire challenges you to try to survive in an empire on the brink of collapse. Face invading barbarian hordes, manage internal revolts, and engage in relentless political intrigue. Your rule will not last forever. How long can you defy history and halt its decline? Perhaps you have seized power in a violent coup, crowning yourself Emperor of a crumbling realm. Perhaps you rule a province and you will make your way to the top as the world collapses around you. Millions await your orders, but your…from store.steampowered.com

    A friend and I spent 6 years making a simulation game, finally released2022 · ▲1,157

I've seen some interests in (simulation) video games here on HN so I thought I'd share a short version of our story. More than 6 years ago, me and my friend from university were playing around with an idea of making a game we always wanted to play. We worked on it on weekends but the progress was quite slow, especially due to so many dead ends and wasted effort. Eventually however, we solidified our direction and decided to take the risk to resign from our well paid SWE jobs and work on it full time. It took more than a year but yesterday we have finally released it on Steam:…

    I made a browser-based RTS game2022 · battle-of-flags.com · ▲212

I've posted this game here before, hopefully a repost is fine as the game has changed quite a bit (improved AI, improved mapeditor, much quicker gameplay, etc). Game is based on JavaScript/Canvas and WebSockets. On the browser side the map is pre-rendered (as a background image), just the mobile units/buildings and animations are dynamically rendered. The lobby server is made in node.js, but the game server is C++ for performance reasons (mainly the pathfinding). I found the C++ WebSocket libraries out there to be too difficult to use so I made my own based on the rfc. Overall I…

    Meatshields – An in-browser turn-based strategy game2017 · ▲113

A few months ago (82 days to be exact!) I posted a link on HN to my game, Meatshields. A bunch of you commented and played my game and gave me some wonderful feedback. Over the last few months I've been playing with many of you and implementing the best of everybody's suggestions. So, thank you, HN for all your help! I feel this is an extreme overhaul I couldn't have done without your input. Since then, I have: Dramatically improved our hosting platform (So it HOPEFULLY won't go down this time (oops.)), Added two new units, Rebalanced all existing units, Added many more maps, Improved the…

    My platforming game written in C 892023 · zamfofex.neocities.org · ▲127

I have been working on this game somewhat sparsely for the past three years or so. However, it is still in a very early stage, and there is a lot of work to do. One of my friends encouraged me to post about it here, since he felt people might find interesting how I don’t use any libraries for it. The game can be played on a browser by virtue of WebAssembly. There are native ports using either MiniFB or SDL2, but you have to build those yourself. I decided to write the game in C because I feel like it is a simple language that a lot of people can understand well enough, and I didn’t think I…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
