GeoTraceroute – Traceroutes on a 3D globe and submarine cables
I've been working on GeoTraceroute for a while and just shipped v2.3 with submarine cable inference. A few things that might interest HN: - 320 community-contributed nodes across 50 countries, all volunteer-run - Three views: 3D globe with day/night rendering, 2D map, and a topological mode that infers submarine cable routing - The submarine cable inference is the part I find most interesting. Since cable routers don't respond to ICMP, the underwater segments are invisible to standard traceroute. The tool detects ocean crossings by geolocation delta between consecutive hops, then infers…
In plain words
GeoTraceroute visualizes internet traffic routes on a 3D globe with day and night rendering, plus 2D map and topological views. It uses 320 volunteer-run nodes across 50 countries to trace network paths. The tool's key feature infers submarine cable routing by detecting ocean crossings between hop locations and predicting likely underwater paths using A* pathfinding, making normally invisible transoceanic segments visible. It is for network engineers and internet infrastructure enthusiasts wanting to understand global routing patterns.

The tool detects ocean crossings by geolocation delta between consecutive hops, then infers the likely cable using a geo graph of landing points with A* pathfinding. I have no way to validate this — if anyone has ideas, I'd love to discuss. Coverage is good in EU and US but thin in Asia, Africa and South America. Hey HN, we built Subtrace (https://subtrace.dev) to let you see all incoming and outgoing requests in your backend server—like Wireshark, but for Docker containers. It comes with a Chrome DevTools-like interface. Check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsGa6ZwVxdA, and see our docs for examples: https://docs.subtrace.dev. Subtrace lets you see every request with full payload, headers, status code, and latency details. Tools like Sentry and OpenTelemetry often leave out these crucial details, making prod debugging slow and annoying. Most of the…

This nifty tool plots the traceroute results and shows you the RTT as well as the distance travelled by the packets! Supports MTR, flyingroutes and of course, traceroute. The existing solutions were too limited so I made that. Let me know if you have any feedback

I built this because I was interested in the data. Didn't fully get it to what I wanted, but thought I'd share it nonetheless. Maybe someone has better data sources they could share! Turns out live ship tracking APIs are expensive so I manually just copied the json from https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:57.4/cente... I'll probably have an ai agent do the same thing on some cron interval, if this gets any fanfare. To actually know if the port is open without live ship tracking I found…
- IVI've made a Monte-Carlo raytracer for glTF scenes in WebGPU2024 · github.com · ▲131
This is a GPU "software" raytracer (i.e. using manual ray-scene intersections and not RTX) written using the WebGPU API that renders glTF scenes. It supports many materials, textures, material & normal mapping, and heavily relies on multiple importance sampling to speed up convergence.

OP here: I created this visualization tool as the byproduct of a supply chain class I taught at Columbia. The pedagogical exercise grew into a full blown visualization and paper about global oil trade. The model: The mechanics are the same as the financial network Eisenberg-Noe: Instead of banks, every country consumes oil interconnected via bilateral trading. Shocks propagate throughout the network, depleting oil reserves when bottleneck nodes (such as the Strait of Hormuz) are blocked. Insights: The interesting part is the mechanics of how the crisis unfolds: for example, France receives 0…

With social media and now AI, its important to keep the indie web alive. There are many people who write frequently. Blogosphere tries to highlight them by fetching the recent posts from personal blogs across many categories. There are two versions: Minimal (HN-inspired, fast, static): https://text.blogosphere.app/ Non-minimal: https://blogosphere.app/ If you don't find your blog (or your favorite ones), please add them. I will review and approve it.
