I used AI to built static recompilers for 5 retro game systems

In the video game industry, it is becoming increasingly important to recognize the anti-consumer practice of live-service games. Consumers pay full price for the game or for in-game content, only for a game to be shut down not even a year later. The publisher is able to take the consumer's money and run and leaving them with nothing as the game is completely unplayable. Gundam Evolution was released September 20th, 2022 and saw its end of service on November 29th, 2023, hardly a year later. Side 7 is a community project that aimed to continue the game's legacy as a private server project. As…

What it does

💡This article discusses heavy use of AI, but the article itself was not written using AI. The words in this article are my own. I wished to communicate my intents and story myself, grammatical errors and all, of the why and how I am using AI📝Each of the 6

Over the past 4 months, I have managed to build static recompilers for five different game systems, each capable of running at least one commercial game for its target platform, all with the assistance of AI. I have been an early experimenter with modern LLM AI tooling. My first introductions to it were actually with OpenAI around June of 2022, in the early ChatGPT era. The models at the time were...underwhelming. They struggled to catch basic grammar issues and often could not reason through even simple copy/pasted functions. But it still fascinated me, as someone who works in software, seeing this rough semblance of reasoning and output that felt more human-like than structured data like…from 1379.tech

    A friend and I spent 6 years making a simulation game, finally released2022 · ▲1,157

I've seen some interests in (simulation) video games here on HN so I thought I'd share a short version of our story. More than 6 years ago, me and my friend from university were playing around with an idea of making a game we always wanted to play. We worked on it on weekends but the progress was quite slow, especially due to so many dead ends and wasted effort. Eventually however, we solidified our direction and decided to take the risk to resign from our well paid SWE jobs and work on it full time. It took more than a year but yesterday we have finally released it on Steam:…

I got laid off from Meta and created a minor hit on Steam2025 · ▲1,581

I was at FB/Meta from late 2013 to early 2023, mostly working in the compiler/runtime spaces. I got hit in the spring 2023 layoff wave. I immediately started making games in my newfound free time (a lifelong interest, and I even worked in AA(A?) back ca. ~2000), and in October 2023 I stumbled upon the idea of a roguelike pachinko/plinko game inspired by Luck Be A Landlord. Things snowballed quickly, I started talking to publishers, then worked like crazy through all of 2024, almost the hardest I've ever worked in my career, and launched the game in December 2024. It's sold…

  • I built 80 mini-games using Fable before it was shut downJun 2026 · minigames.world · ▲54

Dear Hacker News, I'm kindly asking for your participation in the open beta for my AI-managed mini-games website. Thank you in advance! For a limited time window, I'm setting the all-free feature flag to true. I hope you have a lot of fun exploring the AI's sense for games! Here and there, I tweaked it to help with visual consistency. I would be deeply grateful if you opted into analytics. $2,300 in API tokens... Cheers!

I'm building an AI tool that turns Design Systems into React components2024 · robustlaunch.com · ▲8

Hi HN! Solo developer here. 10 days ago, I started building this after spending countless hours copying/pasting marketing sections and fighting to keep them consistent with our design system. I wondered: "What if AI could understand our design system and generate React components that actually match it?" Current progress (10 days in): - Can generate hero sections that follow your design tokens - Uses your actual component variants and styles - Works with Next.js, Tailwind, shadcn/ui It's very early days, but I'm excited to share it with other devs who: - Are tired of rebuilding…

  • I had Fable clone a game, it turned it into an arena combat AI trainerJun 2026 · soldat.bobbby.online · ▲5

I started off with a simple goal: port the game Soldat to Typescript. I ended up not only with the game, but with a full system to train AI bots to play my own game, building a neural net to train new bot AIs from tens of thousands of simulated matches with different strategies. It also runs live all the time on my website and has a news dashboard and you can replay any game exactly. It all was a very fun way to dig into Fable's capabilities. The bill if I had done this with API billing? Nearly $2000.

  • Hey HN, Henry here from Cactus. We open-sourced Needle, a 26M parameter function-calling (tool use) model. It runs at 6000 tok/s prefill and 1200 tok/s decode on consumer devices. We were always frustrated by the little effort made towards building agentic models that run on budget phones, so we conducted investigations that led to an observation: agentic experiences are built upon tool calling, and massive models are overkill for it. Tool calling is fundamentally retrieval-and-assembly (match query to tool name, extract argument values, emit JSON), not reasoning. Cross-attention…
