We've just launched v2.5 of SatCat5, the open-source FPGA Ethernet switch [1]. SatCat5 contains various FPGA building blocks that let you build a custom mixed-media Ethernet switch. It was originally intended for cubesats [2] but has many other potential applications. The headline feature for this release is support for the IEEE-1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP). SatCat5 has demonstrated end-to-end synchronization to within 50 ps-rms, which is approaching the world-leading performance of CERN's White Rabbit Project [3]. Except we're doing time-transfer over regular, non-synchronous…

Dear HN community! Looking forward to hearing your feedback on ACE (assured confidential execution), technology that implements VM-based trusted execution environment (TEE) for embedded RISC-V systems with focus on a formally verified and auditable firmware. We target high-assurance systems that can benefit from compartmentalization and hardware-backed isolation. The key ingredient called security monitor (firmware) is implemented in Rust. The formal specification is defined as annotations directly in code and gets translated to Coq using RefinedRust automation. ACE design is now part of the…

To my knowledge, this is the first formally verified implementation of a 3D constructive solid geometry (CSG) operation: mesh intersection, implemented in Lean 4 and verified against a concise specification that pins down the surface of the resulting mesh exactly and guarantees practical well-formedness conditions on the triangulation. This project is also an experiment in avoiding having to trust AI-generated code. A human reviewer only needs to read 93 lines of formal specification and run the Lean checker to certify the correctness of the kernel, skipping the intricate 1000+ lines of…

We open-sourced the TLA+ and Fizzbee verified spec behind Ursa's storage engine. Verification across ~200K states caught a design bug that years of production missed. We then handed the spec to Claude Code — it produced a working Rust implementation (concurrent producers, compaction, fencing) without back-and-forth. We think verified specs are the best harness for coding agents: open-source the spec, let anyone implement it.

I built a small Linux tool to deterministically verify GPU PCIe link health and bandwidth. It reports: - Negotiated PCIe generation and width - Peak Host→Device and Device→Host memcpy bandwidth - Sustained PCIe TX/RX utilization via NVML - A rule-based verdict derived from observable hardware data only This exists because PCIe issues (Gen downgrades, reduced lane width, risers, bifurcation) are often invisible at the application layer and can’t be fixed by kernel tuning or async overlap. Linux-only: it relies on sysfs and PCIe AER exposure that Windows does not provide.

Hi HN, I've been developing Portkey Gateway, an open-source AI gateway that's now processing billions of tokens daily across 200+ LLMs. Today, we're launching a significant update: integrated Guardrails at the gateway level. Key technical features: 1. Guardrails as middleware: We've implemented a hooks architecture that allows guardrails to act as middleware in the request/response flow. This enables real-time LLM output evaluation and transformation. 2. Flexible orchestration: The gateway can now route requests based on guardrail verdicts. This allows for complex logic like fallbacks…
