24 alternatives to placesloth.com – generate placeholder images of sloths
Hey all, Last week I had to make a couple of test pages and turned to one of my favorite sites to fill it with some imagery: https://placebear.com/ There's a pretty large amount of sites like this, but none seemed to be serving the superior animal: sloths. So I hacked this together quickly over the weekend. It's definitely ugly code and an ugly approach, nothing prevents this from going OOM, it'll probably fall over under a bit of load (or when the single spot instance running it gets replaced), but it was fun to build and fills my needs. Hope this inspires you to expand the…

Hi HN, I built a little tool to help me get better at remembering country locations on the map: https://learn-worldmap.netlify.app/ It's made from plain HTML/CSS/JS, and not intended to make any money or anything. Just thought that maybe someone else may enjoy it. Also of course happy about any feedback! Cheerz.

I just redesigned an old (1 year) project and would appreciate any feedback. The site has no real purpose other than allowing you to explore the large amount of imagery gathered by Google. You can make it less random by choosing a country, or indeed any geographical area (cities etc.) http://www.mapcrunch.com Thanks

http://www.placeguitar.com My weekend project is, as you may have guessed, an image placeholder service that serves up guitars! The inspiration came from a tweet (http://twitter.com/#!/zedshaw/status/88126558686019584 ). I decided to hack it together using Python on Google App Engine. The service is simple - pass in your width and height in the url (e.g. www.placeguitar.com/800/600 to get an 800 by 600 image) and get back a random image of a guitar to your size spec. Pop the url in the src of your img tag to use it on a site. That's all it does. There is a quick and dirty admin only form to…

http://imagestash.org/ Kind of like Instapaper for images. While surfing at home one evening I found the perfect desktop background ... for my work machine. I got to pondering the quickest way to save a random image so I could get to it on all of my devices, got a wee bit carried away with the technical possibilities, and this was the result. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

flatchybird.com Hopefully HN isn't too beneath a little fart humor from time to time. We may be a little immature at Curious Media, but we have a lot of fun! Our initial goal was two days, but its looking a little more like 3.5 days at this point for the web version. We thought a farting bird would be pretty funny. We repurposed some of the artwork from another one of our games to save a little time and built it using ImpactJS. There is a leader board that records your best score. There are still some minor bugs and such, but overall it should be fairly playable on desktops, tablets and…

I love culture + travel, and one of my favorite pastimes is dropping into random streets on Google Street View. I just LOVE getting a tiny snippet into how people live, the architecture, and discovering hidden corners of places I'll probably never visit. I'm kinda weird like that. When AI came along, I started asking it to explain what I was looking at - and I learned a ton. I couldn't stop using this combo. So I built Streetwhip. It's kinda like reverse Geoguessr - instead of guessing where you are, you get educated about places as if you had a smart local guide with you. What used to be…

www.schmeebs.com I built this site in two days. I tried to make it a fusion of Twitter + Digg in that people will be able to follow certain "domains" of news then be able to see popular stuff from there. Its as real time as it can be at this point. Would welcome any thoughts on it!

We’re about to start promoting our coming soon landing pages and wanted to get some feedback from the HN community first. http://soupnextdoor.com - Marketplace for dinner parties We’re running a competition about where our launch will be. This will give us something to promote other than the fact that we’re coming soon and hopefully get some conversation started. We’re looking for feedback across the board. UI, color scheme, browser compatibility issues, problems with our idea, marketing ideas, issues with how we’ve worded things, etc We’ve left Django in debug mode for the time being so if…

A small weekend project built for fun: You start with a picture and post pics that visually rhyme. Based on whatever you see fit. Of course, you can invite friends, too! Over time a stream of association emerges, the "verse" The frontpage is at http://picrhyme.com/ and a good example of what happens can be found here: http://picrhyme.com/images/180/history (How to get from Helvetica to Asparagus via Woodstock!) At least for me it triggers some really ticklish place in my brain, adding those picture rhymes. Maybe you'll enjoy it as much as I do. Thank you for any feedback and with best wishes.

Bitemap▲3I know the internet likes to celebrate perfect bites and debate where to take the next bite of half-finished sandwiches. So I built Bitemap. You see a photo of a sandwich, you tap where you'd take your next bite, and it shows a heatmap of where everyone else bit. It's early. Most of the sandwiches are ones I uploaded to seed it and the maps are still filling in, so some are thin. You can add your own too. No signup, nothing to install. Curious what you think, and where you'd bite. Happy to answer anything about how it's built.

Put this together this afternoon. I've been after something to quickly jot down the odd piece of information that I can access later in the day when browsing the web. Hopefully you find it useful. Criticism/thoughts/ideas greatly appreciated. I should add, since all the hard work here lies in the work of others here — garlic.js is a great plugin for handling localstorage. Cheers Jason
