Release 1.8.2 of wazero, the zero dependency WebAssembly runtime for Go, brings the amd64 compiler to 4 new OSes: NetBSD, DragonFly BSD, illumos and Solaris. The compiler also supports Linux, FreeBSD, macOS and Windows, on amd64 and arm64. This didn't require any changes to the compiler, just enabling it after setting up tests to validate that it already worked. Now the HN hook: noticeably absent is OpenBSD, which I failed to get working, even after taking W^X into account (we already had that for arm64 on macOS). If you wanna help, please drop us a note!

Hey HN! I just released go-nbd, a lightweight Go library for effortlessly creating NBD servers and clients. Its a neat tool for creating custom Linux block devices with arbitrary backends, such as a file, byte slice or what I'm planning to use it for, a tape drive. While there are a few partially abandoned projects like this out there already, this library tries to be as maintainable as possible by only implementing the most recent handshake revision and baseline functionality for both the client and the server, while still having enough support to be useful. When it came time to open source wxWidgets-wasm, I decided to port another complex app as a test case, and Audacity seemed like the obvious choice. https://github.com/ncruces/go-sqlite3 was doing poorly on this benchmark that was posted yesterday to HackerNews [1]. With the help of some pprof, I was able to trace it to a serious performance regression introduced two weeks ago, and come up with the fix (happy to field questions, if you're interested in the nitty gritty). This is ymawky, a static file web server for MacOS written entirely in ARM64 assembly. It supports GET, PUT, DELETE, HEAD, and OPTIONS requests, and supports Range: bytes=X-Y headers (which allows scrubbing for video streaming). It decodes percent-encoded URLs, strictly enforces docroot, serves custom error pages for any HTTP error response, supports directory listing, and has (some) mitigations against slowloris-like attacks. As a personal project I wrote a really tiny Wat 2 Wasm compiler in Go. Mainly for demonstrative and educational purposes. It was tough: I didn't know anything about WebAssembly internals and I'm a newbie with Go... so I tried to document it as much as I could for anyone that would like to approach the quest in the future! Tesseract is one of the largest Open Source OCR (Optical Character Recognition) projects. There is already a Go library for using Tesseract from Go with CGo, called Gosseract. However if you are interested in OCR from Go without C complicating building and cross-compiling, there aren't any other options. Wazero is a Go WASM runtime that doesn't have any CGo dependencies. With Emscripten Tesseract has been compiled to WASM and ran within Wazero. Gogosseract provides a simple API on top of this. This project has been an interesting delve into the world of WASM.

I make a no-CGO Go SQLite driver, by compiling the amalgamation to Wasm, then loading the result with wazero (a CGO-free Wasm runtime). To compile SQLite, I use wasi-sdk, which uses wasi-libc, which is based on musl. It's been said that musl is slow(er than glibc), which is true, to a point. musl uses SWAR on a size_t to implement various functions in string.h. This is fine, except size_t is just 32-bit on Wasm. I found that implementing a few of those functions with Wasm SIMD128 can make them go around 4x faster. Other functions don't even use SWAR; redoing those can make them 16x faster.…

Hi HN, I’ve been working on Gore – a port of the classic Doom engine written in pure Go, based on a ccgo C-to-Go translation of Doom Generic. It loads original WAD files, uses a software renderer (no SDL or CGO, or Go dependencies outside the standard library). I built GRSH because I wanted a modern, memory-safe shell that feels native to FreeBSD but works seamlessly on macOS. While there are many shells out there, GRSH is my take on a minimal, fast, and secure command interpreter written entirely in Rust.
