Can you spot the better chart?

I've been using Matplotlib for years and even created python-graph-gallery.com to help people quickly build charts with Python. However, I’ve always struggled to grasp the "big picture" of how everything fits together. That's why I'm now working on a new project called Matplotlib Journey, and I’d love to get your feedback! My goal is to explain everything from scratch, so anyone can gain a true understanding of how this essential library works.

What it does

Learn the key data visualization design principles through a fun, interactive game. Choose the better-looking graph and understand what makes it work.

Which version of each chart looks best? Design principles matter in data visualization too. Ignore them, and your chart won’t look polished or trustworthy. Let’s see what you’ve got ⏱️! I spend a lot of time teaching and speaking about data visualization . I help people choose the right chart with a decision tree , point out common pitfalls , and show how to code any chart in R or Python . Over time, I noticed something: people quickly understand the fundamentals of data visualization, but one crucial piece is often missing. A graph won’t make an impact if it doesn’t look clean. But what does clean , beautiful , or professional really mean? 🤔 That’s hard to teach, at least for me. I…from matplotlib-journey.com

Many JS libraries exist to build graphs on the web (Vega, chartJS, Plotly...). They allow to make charts quickly. But you lose flexibility: you're limited by the options they offer. I just created a gallery with hundreds of graphs made with d3.js and React. - Examples are split by graph types - They all come with explanation and code sandboxes - Gradual complexity to ease the learning curve It took me ages to create this project! Feedback welcome!

I see so many beautiful charts made with R. And not that many made with Python. So I wanted to prove that it was doable with Python too! I wrote 22 tutorials to create stunning charts I love with Matplotlib. Why are R people creating more polished charts??

Hi everyone! Graphs is the intersection of data visualization and the daily web puzzle genre (Wordle, NYT Mini Crossword, Connections, etc.). Every day, you are given a nameless graph and 5 options to select the right dataset it is representing. Upon winning, you can access the underlying dataset and other info + maintain a streak and stats. It's super simple - check out today's chart and you should be able to get the gist quickly. My email + twitter account (@graphsgame) is on the page, would love a feedback or a follow. Don't hesitate to reach out!

I've been iterating on a small galaxy visualization project that originally started as a university course assignment, using only provided sample data (no real astronomical distances). Recently, I updated it to include redshift-based distance data, which makes the 3D structure more meaningful and closer to real large-scale galaxy distributions. Repo: https://github.com/Avicted/galaxy_visualization_raylib Demo video (3D navigation + galaxy structures): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC83RDWuPvw Current state: - Written in C (C99 standard) using Raylib -…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

  • I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app to easily build a workout routine. The project had traction (1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, ~20K visits/month), but was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles. The new owner stopped maintaining it, and the repo went abandoned. Over the next 9 months, I sent 15 emails to try to save it : no replies. Feature requests & issues were ignored. The community was left with a "broken" tool let's say. I couldn't just let it die So I built the new version from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but a better…
