24 alternatives to 1990s Game Dev Algorithms for Distributed Systems
Classic physics engine algorithms — SAT collision detection and Morton Z-curve indexing — become viable on-chain primitives only where the execution model supports dynamic object access at runtime. Here's why EVM, Solana, and Aptos can't run them, and Sui can.
1990s Game Dev Algorithms for Distributed Systems is a collection of computational methods from classic game development adapted for distributed computing environments. It is designed for software engineers and systems… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. In the wake of all the Unity nonsense, just wanted to toss the Raverie engine into this mix :) We’re building off a previous engine that we worked on for DigiPen Institute of Technology called the Zero Engine with a similar component based design architecture to Unity. Our engine had a unique feature called Spaces: separate worlds/levels that you can instantiate and run at the same time, which became super useful for creating UI overlays using only game objects, running multiple simulations, etc. The lighting and rendering engine is scriptable, and the default deferred rendering…

I made a chess engine today, and made it fit within 2KB. I used a variant of MinMax called Negamax, with alpha beta pruning. For the board representation I have used a 120-cell "mailbox". I managed to squeeze in checkmate/stalemate in there, after trimming out some edge cases. I am a great fan of demoscene (computer art subculture) since middle school, and hence it was a ritual i had to perform. For estimating the Elo, I measured 240 automated games against Stockfish Elo levels (1320 to 1600) under fixed depth-5 and some constrained rules, using equal color distribution. Then converted…

Modd.io is a collaborative game editor that runs in browser. It's kind of like Figma for game dev. We made this engine low-code and multiplayer-first, so developeres can quickly prototype casual multiplayer games. I hope some of you guys will find this useful. Would love to hear feedback also. Thank you. Engine Demo: https://www.modd.io

I have been working on this game somewhat sparsely for the past three years or so. However, it is still in a very early stage, and there is a lot of work to do. One of my friends encouraged me to post about it here, since he felt people might find interesting how I don’t use any libraries for it. The game can be played on a browser by virtue of WebAssembly. There are native ports using either MiniFB or SDL2, but you have to build those yourself. I decided to write the game in C because I feel like it is a simple language that a lot of people can understand well enough, and I didn’t think I…

Heya. I created a flexible collision engine for broad detection in C that's also pretty fast. Personally that's my best, so I wanted to show it here. Although... still not as fast as DragonEnergy's one that supposedly handled millions of agents bouncing off each other every frame on an old i3, haha. I hope I get better at this! He set the bar pretty high for me. I was considering including some small function that tries finding the nearest entity, although I think it might be better to simply use query for that matter. Perhaps in the future I will get a good idea of how to do that more…

Hopper▲100Hi HN, we’re Sai and Aayush, and we’re building Hypercubic (https://www.hypercubic.ai/), bringing AI tools to the mainframe and COBOL world. (We did a Launch HN last year: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45877517.) Today we’re launching Hopper, an agentic development environment for mainframes. You can download it here: https://www.hypercubic.ai/hopper, and you can also request access and immediately get a mainframe user account to play with. There's also a video runthrough at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q81L5DcfBvE.…

Hi HN, I've become lazier in my old age and struggle to replay my favorite Sierra games from the 80s and 90s because I keep getting into those situations where I need an item from 3 acts ago, I have no save game handy, and now I gotta make dinner. So I'm building the Lucasartsifier: a static analysis tool that decompiles Sierra resource files, automatically finds those states, automatically generates code to prevent the player from getting into those states, then emits loose patch files that can be placed alongside the original game resources. There's no game-specific code involved; all the…

GitHub repo: https://github.com/ArcadeMakerSources/ArcadeMaker (first of all, i want to say that I made this project for fun and challenge. I always wanted to create my own language. This has no business goal or something.) So the project is a 2D game engine (MonoGame backend) inspired by GameMaker 8. It includes its own IDE (built with WinForms) and an interpreted programming language that I wrote myself. The language—definitely the biggest challenge in the project—is a simple dynamically typed language. When I started, I had zero knowledge of how to build something like…

Earlier this year, we released our open-source game engine [0] built with Rust, WebAssembly, and WebGPU. Today, we’re happy to announce the Ambient platform, which brings web deployment, server hosting, and more to the runtime. With Ambient, you can make a game, deploy it to the browser in one command, share your URL and instantly play with others, no downloads or installs needed. Our WASM use is innovative; it is being used as both a sandboxed runtime for user code, and as a way to run the entire Ambient runtime in the browser. This, paired with our ECS data model, enables a highly modular…

Hi HN, I'm a 19-year-old aerospace student. I spent the last 13 months building a custom Linux distro from scratch because I wanted to see if we could treat the OS kernel as a mathematical engine rather than a deterministic administrator. The Stack: Flux (The Shell): A custom math-native shell where x² and ∑ are valid syntax. It parses mathematical notation directly into optimized SIMD instructions (no Python wrapper). Tenet (The Scheduler): Written in Tenet (my custom DSL for game theory). The scheduler is a Nash Equilibrium solver compiled to native code. In my benchmarks (Ryzen 7 5800HS),…

Hello HN, I'm sharing a little open-source utility I wrote recently. I'm a huge fan of Brendan Gregg's "BPF Performance Tools" book. However, every time I SSH into a fresh server, most of the diagnostic tools aren't installed there and installing them can be really annoying. I decided to use Nix package manager and LLMs to make this process straightforward. My utility first downloads a "toolbox" of Linux utilities (built with Nix), runs Brendan Gregg's famous "60-second Linux analysis" playbook and then summarizes the results with an LLM. So "60-second Linux analysis" now becomes a single…

We were genuinely impressed by Yann LeCun’s recent announcement about his Sudoku solver based on Energy-Based Models here: https://logicalintelligence.com/yann-lecun So we (a software engineer and prodigy mathematician) worked in the weekend to see if we can beat it and we did! If Kona solves puzzles in 313 milliseconds, we currently solve 270,000 puzzles per second! We do not know the internal mechanics behind Logical Intelligence’s system, but we are happy to share ours in the webpage there is a full description, code and also a paper published. Hey HN, just wanted to share a fun, vibe-coded Friday night experiment: a little playground for writing cellular automata in a subset of Rust, which is then compiled into WGSL. Since it lets you dynamically change parameters while the simulation is running via a TUI, it's easy to discover weird behaviors without remembering how you got there. If you press "s", it will save the complete history to a JSON file (a timeline of the parameters that were changed at given ticks), so you can replay it and regenerate the discovery. You can pan/zoom, and while the main simulation window is in…

Hey HN, Automated research is the next big step in AI, with companies like OpenAI aiming to debut a fully automated researcher by 2028 (https://www.technologyreview.com/2026/03/20/1134438/openai-i...). However, there is a very real possibility that much of this corporate research will remain closed to the general public. To counter this, we spent the last month building Enlidea---a machine-to-machine ecosystem for open research. It's a decentralized research hub where autonomous agents propose hypotheses, stake bounties, execute code, and perform automated…
