24 alternatives to I built a WASI playground for running CLI binaries in the browser
Run WebAssembly made for outside the browser, inside the browser.
Runno is a browser-based playground for executing WebAssembly System Interface (WASI) command-line binaries without installation. It lets developers run CLI tools directly in a web browser, making it useful for… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. This is the entire Firefox browser rendering to a element. Gecko, all UI components, and the Spidermonkey JS engine are all compiled and running in WebAssembly. Here are a few things you might find interesting: - This is fully end to end encrypted! We use the WISP protocol for TCP-over-websockets. - There is a novel WASM->JS JIT for experimental site speedup - This port cost over 25k in opus/fable tokens for debugging and JIT research This was just a fun experiment to push the boundaries of WebAssembly. For a more usable "browser in browser" experience, we also built…

Hi everyone, I built a runtime to isolate untrusted code using wasm sandboxes. Basically, it protects your host system from problems that untrusted code can cause. We’ve had a great discussion about sandboxing in Python lately that elaborates a bit more on the problem [1]. In TypeScript, wasm integration is even more natural thanks to the close proximity between both ecosystems. The core is built in Rust. On top of that, I use WASI 0.2 via wasmtime and the component model, along with custom SDKs that keep things as idiomatic as possible. For example, in Python we have a simple decorator:…

Hi HN — I’m learning Rust and decided to build a universal CLI for running code in many languages. The tool, Run, aims to be a single, minimal dependency utility for: running one-off snippets (from CLI flags), running files, reading and executing piped stdin, and providing language-specific REPLs that you can switch between interactively. I designed it to support both interpreted languages (Python, JS, Ruby, etc.) and compiled languages (Rust, Go, C/C++). It detects languages from flags or file extensions, can compile temporary files for compiled languages, and exposes a unified REPL…

I usually build web games in C++, but using Emscripten always felt like overkill for what I was doing. I don't need full POSIX emulation or a massive standard library just to render some stuff to a canvas and handle basic UI. The main thing I wanted to solve was the JS/WASM interop bottleneck. Instead of using the standard glue code for every call, I moved everything to a Shared Memory architecture using Command and Event buffers. The way it works is that I batch all the instructions in WASM and then just send a single "flush" signal to JS. The JS side then reads everything directly out…

A WebAssembly runtime embedded in Godot game engine projects. Interact with Wasm modules from GDScript. Accessing Wasm modules via GDScript provides the following benefits. - Sandboxed environment allows safely loading zero-trust mods/extensions to a project. - Single target means that Wasm modules can be built from any language e.g. Rust, Go, AssemblyScript and the single binary can be run on all platforms. - Fast execution compared to GDScript allows for offloading compute-heavy operations or running bots/mods/etc. at high FPS. This might be useful for loading mods, bot AI,…

Earlier this year, we released our open-source game engine [0] built with Rust, WebAssembly, and WebGPU. Today, we’re happy to announce the Ambient platform, which brings web deployment, server hosting, and more to the runtime. With Ambient, you can make a game, deploy it to the browser in one command, share your URL and instantly play with others, no downloads or installs needed. Our WASM use is innovative; it is being used as both a sandboxed runtime for user code, and as a way to run the entire Ambient runtime in the browser. This, paired with our ECS data model, enables a highly modular…

I've been working with a partner team to integrate wasm workloads with existing container toolchains with the goal of enabling wasm workloads anywhere, be it on the edge, in kubernetes, or wherever. To that end, this project implements a containerd shim which runs those wasm workloads. It is designed as a library to bring your own host implementation, but also includes an implementation for WASI. Right now the library assumes you are using wasmtime, which is embedded in. It works either standalone (run with containerd directly) or in kubernetes. Kubernetes networking and storage are wired…
