This project started with me wanting to find a nice place to live with my partner. I'm a data scientist by day so I thought I'd approach it systematically. When I showed it to my friends, many said they wanted to try it too, so I made it into an app and put it online. Personally this was fueled by my own frustrations when I was apartment hunting in NYC. Hello HN! We're a small team in Kyoto building a website called dédédé (https://dedede.de/en) that invites people to share the various positives, negatives, oddities, etc. they find in urban spaces. The project grew out of an earlier effort where we'd built an app that assisted participatory urbanism workshops run by local nonprofits. With the new platform, we're trying to build something similar but more casual and hopefully with broader appeal, that'll be fun to use even outside of formal workshop situations. I've built this as a side project last month. I know there are a few similar sites out there, but I've found them cumbersome to navigate with ads that slow down the experience. So I decided to take a stab at it and build my own version, with a minimalist UI (+ I implemented a custom right-click menu to enable navigation even when the UI is hidden), ad-free, just for fun. There are over 130+ cities that you can explore right now, but I'm constantly adding new ones.

I've been building a bunch of US geography tools/games/visualizations and thought folks on HN might like this one. There are also drive-time and bike-time tools available on the same page. For folks interested, all of the data comes from OpenStreetMap and the US Census at the moment - OSM for routing and points interest and the US Census for population data. Backstory: Few years back, I used a shared spreadsheet (GSheets) to organize my property hunt, and found it quite frustrating to keep on top of things just on the productivity side alone. I love culture + travel, and one of my favorite pastimes is dropping into random streets on Google Street View. I came up with this idea when I was looking to move to London with a friend. I quickly learned how frustrating it is to trial-and-error housing options for days on end, just to be denied after days of searching due to some grotesque counteroffer. Hi HN! In the last couple of weeks I've been working on Cranki: Cranki = Crosswords + Anki. (It's a stupid name tbh, haha) I like doing crosswords in Spanish (to learn vocab) but none of the apps out there allowed me to use my own list of words that I come across. So I built one instead. As I couldn't find a proper web based open source tool that could help me with my bookkeeping, I spend a week to built one myself. It's based on laravel and provides revenue, expenses, travel allowance and depreciation sections. Everything is then merged to an annual statement, that can be exported as a pdf and used for tax filing. It's far away from perfect (no tests yet), but I would be happy to hear what you think about it and maybe find someone to join in.

For years, I have struggled to understand my cash flow and save for the future. In addition to that, my wife has many credit cards and accounts that complicate matters. I am building a tool that connects all our accounts, helps us create a budget, and tracks and adjusts expenses on the fly. I am also sprinkling some AI magic on it for financial suggestions. I am looking for feedback on the implementation. More importantly, I am looking for more beta testers to improve the product.

Fully leaned into vibe coding this time around. Started on v0, at some point ejected into running locally (getting v0's exported folder to run locally was a challenge), then iterated with Cursor over the course of a few hours. Really neat how much can be accomplished just conversationally these days.

My other half runs a care home in the UK. She was frustrated with some of the remaining paper based processes, and the 'techy' alternatives were off-putting. So we built Care Home Domestic. The project is self funded and has been a fun and exciting journey! It is currently in use at a few homes and feedback so far is really good. There's loads of work still to do, but we've gone out early and aim to be reactive to the feedback of our users.

I've moved around a lot. Finding information is easy. Finding people is weirdly hard. So I made this — a map where you drop a pin and see who else is around. Filter by digital nomads, freelancers, remote workers, retirees. See if they just arrived or have been there for years. Spot someone interesting? Send a message. No signup. No feed. No tracking.
