24 alternatives to Mboxreader – easily view your Gmail Takeouts
Hey HN, Did you know you can download all your emails (and attachments) from GMail into a .mbox format using Google Takeout (https://takeout.google.com)? I did this and for the longest time my .mbox backup just sat around. I built a web app that can take an .mbox file and load it into a UI that looks like GMail: threaded conversations, original labels and categories, contacts, attachments, and full-text search. The mail never leaves your machine: the upload and parsing happens in a Web Worker in your own browser, and the archive is stored in browser storage on your device. Close…

Hey HN, I’m the creator of Mail Memories. Like many of you, I've had my Gmail address for more than 20 years. A few years ago, I got curious and wanted to see what photos were buried deep in my account. I ended up finding lots of "lost" pictures of old friends, family members, and a ridiculous number of vintage memes. I originally built and launched this as a SaaS, but even with code and policies in place that kept users' photos private, I figured everyone would feel more comfortable with a desktop app. So, I threw out the server architecture and completely rewrote it as a 100% local desktop…

Hey guys, so I've been building my own Gmail for the past few weeks and would like your feedback. Find a preview here: http://i.imgur.com/UDz2y.png (Mouse cursor is over the "REPLY" button, to show the hover-effect) The app you see in the screenshot is what I've been using in the past week and it starts to feel better than the gmail interface. Just a quick explanation: - It's conversation-based like Gmail. - Conversations with new emails are on the left. - Conversations may be labeled ... based on predefined filters or manually. - Every conversation stays in the left sidebar until marked…

I always assumed Gmail bloat came from large attachments. Turns out 3 senders were responsible for 30% of my inbox — thousands of tiny emails I'd never thought to clean up. I built mailtrim to surface this pattern: - ranks senders by actual storage impact (not just count) - confidence scoring on what's safe to bulk-delete - 30-day undo on everything — nothing is permanent by default - runs entirely locally, no email data leaves your machine Free, open source (MIT). No subscription, no backend. One friction point upfront: Gmail API setup is one-time, ~15 min. After that it's just `mailtrim…

Hi everyone, My motivation for building this was to address the trouble of mass unsubscribing from unwanted emails and deleting bulk emails while ensuring privacy and control over the process. With this Chrome extension, emails are not sent to any external servers. All calls to the Gmail API happen locally on your device. Feedback and suggestions are welcome!

Hey HN, I’d like to share an open-source project I’ve created. It is an email archiving tool that can back up your whole email system with full-text search capabilities. The project is called Open Archiver, and it is able to archive and index emails from cloud-based email inboxes, including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and any IMAP-enabled email inbox. You can connect it to your email provider, and it copies every single incoming and outgoing email into a secure archive that you control (Your local storage or S3-compatible storage). Some features: - Archive and index all emails and…
