Products that do what My 13-year-old built an ant colony tracker does
He's 13 years old. He wanted to track his own ant colonies — growth, feeding, humidity, and other metrics. He built the whole app himself with some help from AI tools; I just helped him deploy it to a server. Would love to hear your feedback!

Hello everyone! I created a short game in just a few days, just for fun, where you play as an ant and feed it apples This game also features random landscape generation, with clouds and trees arranged in a chaotic pattern across all coordinates. This is what took me the longest time :) I would appreciate your feedback ^ ^

I was inspired to make a web based ants simulator after watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81GQNPJip2Y Any feedback appreciated. Best viewed on Chromium based browsers. Firefox is slow for some reason and Safari is not tested as I don't have a Mac.

We built an ant colony simulation as an internal hiring challenge at Moment and decided to open it up publicly. You write a program in a custom assembly-like (we call it ant-ssembly) instruction set that controls 200 ants. Each ant can sense nearby cells (food, pheromones, home, other ants) but has no global view. The only coordination mechanism is pheromone trails, which ants can emit and sense them, but that's it. Your program runs identically on every ant. The goal is to collect the highest percentage of food across a set of maps. Different map layouts (clustered food, scattered,…

Hello HN! I'm the author of Ant, a JavaScript ecosystem built around a runtime with its own JavaScript engine. Ant also includes a package manager, the ants.land package registry, a platform for deploying and hosting applications, and Ant Desktop for building native desktop apps with web technologies, similar to Electron. The goal is for these pieces to work as one coherent platform while remaining compatible with the wider JavaScript ecosystem. It's still early, and I'd appreciate any feedback on the overall direction or what you'd like to see from an e2e alternative to the existing…

Hello HN! Hope you are well. I'm creating my first video game. It's nowhere near complete, but I am eager for feedback, so here I am! My game is a digital ant farm. You should think SimAnt + Tamagotchi. Here's a picture: https://i.imgur.com/dIJaraG.png It's written in Rust/Bevy, compiled to WASM, and is open-source, https://github.com/MeoMix/symbiants. Fair warning, though, this is my first time writing in Rust/Bevy. My goal is to give people cute ants that do cute ant stuff 24/7, ask people to look after their ants and to feed them…

Hi HN! I built AI Baby Monitor – a tiny stack (Redis + vLLM + Streamlit) that watches a video stream and a YAML list of safety rules. If the model spots a rule being broken it plays beep sound, so you can quickly glance over and check on your baby. Why? When we bought a crib for our daughter, the first thing she tried was climbing over the rail :/ I got a bit paranoid about constantly watching her over, so I thought of a helper that can *actively* watch the baby, while parents could stay *semi-actively* alert. It’s meant to be an additional set of eyes, and *not* a replacement for the…

Hi HN, I built BabyStepsJs to track the development of my newborn daughter in the form of a skill tree. It’s a mix of gamified documentation of her current progress and a bit of education on what she might discover next. I conducted a similar development experiment a few months ago with the same rules (see the cs-util-com/InstantScribe repo): - Act mainly as the PM and QA for the AI (this time ChatGPT-o1) and iteratively add user stories and requirements to extend the feature set. - Each iteration was typically a single commit, so the AI’s proposed changes were easy to review in the git…

I've been running Simpluna, a period-tracking app, for six years. It's a company based in Tokyo, Japan, but development and operations are basically a one-person effort. The app is built with React Native (Expo). The defining trait of the app is that it's simple, with no unnecessary features. Recording periods, calculating predictions, and sending notifications — that's the core of it. This space is dominated by big players (Flo, Clue, and in Japan, Luna Luna). Building something similar would have been hopeless, so I made the things those apps don't have my selling point. Optional features…

I started running 5 years ago and it completely changed me. Recently, I decided to train for my first marathon and needed something more than just tracking my runs to motivate me. I noticed all the apps currently available are just trackers and route finders, but nothing has solved the problem of consistency. So I thought of combining the basic idea of the Forest app with running and created a small app for myself which would reward me with plants and trees for my runs. I am not a mobile developer but then i came across Capacitor. Since I knew Next.js and have been working with it for the…

I'm 17 and recently launched a private beta for Biohack - a tool that scans food products and gives a longevity score based on impact on aging factors such as inflammation, omega ratio, toxins and more. Still early and a bit rough, but I'm looking for honest feedback from people who care about health span and deep nutrition. Would love your thoughts.

Hi HN! I'm a 15-year-old dev in Hong Kong who built ExcelTutor.pro. It's an AI assistant that generates Excel formulas, SQL queries, and automation scripts from plain English. Key features: * Infinite usage - no query limits * Formula generation - converts natural language to Excel formulas * SQL Query Builder - creates database queries from prompts * Automation Scripts - automates repetitive spreadsheet tasks Unlike manual solutions, it handles things like: =XLOOKUP(A2,Inventory!B:B,Inventory!F:F,"Not Found") in seconds. No more trial-and-error or Stack Overflow digging. You can: - Describe…

Hey HN! I have been working on Ant for a while now, would love to share around now. What is Ant? It's my JavaScript runtime, built from scratch over many hours of work. Much effort has gone into keeping the binary size small, around 9MB at the moment (6.5 MB with -Os). On my M4 Pro, the hono coldstart bench (examples/npm/hono/bench-coldstart.js) lands around 5ms, about 2.4x faster than bun, and 5.8x faster than node. To keep things small, the engine ("Ant Silver") is hand-written, not a wrapper around V8/JSC/SpiderMonkey. The JIT is still a work in progress but it…
