I wanted to share a simple web app I created recently, which lets you estimate income taxes owed in the US: https://taxsim.app All the calculations occur directly in the browser, and are powered by a Fortran program that has been converted to WASM using emscripten. This calculator was originally developed in the 1970s [1] by the non-profit National Bureau of Economic Research. NBER has been maintaining this F77 codebase for the last 50 years, and uses it primarily for academic research on tax policy. The Fortran source code itself is over 1MB of text, because it codifies both…

There's been a lot of discussion around the california budget and some proposed tax policies, so I asked claude code to research the budget and turn it into an interactive dashboard. Using async subagents claude was able to research ~a dozen budget line items at once across multiple years, adding lots of helpful context and graphs to someone like me who was starting with little familiarity. It still struggles with frontend changes, but for research this probably 20-40x's my throughput. Let me know any additional data or visualizations that would be interesting to add!

Hey HN, I am the creator of senatestockwatcher.com and im finally happy to say that the same data that is filed from the House of Representatives is now live for everyone to watch, report against, and use. https://housestockwatcher.com When Senate Stock Watcher was released, the US was in the midst of an election year and after the COVID market crash the SEC had opened some investigations on 3 Senators for insider trading allegations. My interest in politics and finance lead me to build that website, but the number one question I always got was "where is the houses' data?" The…

After getting a lot of feedback on my project FinanceLinx.com, which helps startups and growing businesses with finding grants and government backed loans, I've decided to make some of the information public. If you go to the site now, there's an option to request a sample of the financing data. Please let me know how I can improve this, any constructive feedback is welcome!

Congressional trading data is relatively commoditized, but I couldn't find any open-source version with the features I wanted. The data is lagged (median 28 days from trade to disclosure, and 19% miss this deadline), but there's still interesting patterns to explore. Repo: https://github.com/kadoa-org/congress-trading-monitor Let me know if you have any suggestions for improvements!

It came up in a post yesterday about the US Federal Reserve Interest Rate having a significant impact on tech hiring. I used the HN api to pull down the posts for "Who's Hiring" and "Who Wants to be Hired," then added the Fed interest rates to see how well it mapped. The results were pretty interesting. repo: https://github.com/bobbywilson0/hn-whos-hiring
