24 alternatives to 3D Reconstruction Using Structure from Motion with OpenGL Visualization

Last year at CVPR 2018, I became interested in the Apolloscape dataset and the localization task challenge that was announced for ECCV 2018. I dived into the...

I'm working on a GPS track visualizer for quite some time. It shines in hilly and mountaineous terrain (where a 3D view makes more sense), but it also offers quite a lot of Strava-like features (statistics etc.). You can upload your GPX and FIT files manually, or sync directly with Garmin, Coros and Polar. See https://cubetrek.com for the live app and check out some examples there. It's free and opens source. Also, anyone who likes to work with 3D visualizations (especially Babylon.js), let me know if you like to help polish this thing further.

Vision models have been gaining popularity as a replacement for traditional OCR. Especially with Gemini 2.0 becoming cost competitive with the cloud platforms. We've been continuously evaluating different models since we released the Zerox package last year (https://github.com/getomni-ai/zerox). And we wanted to put some numbers behind it. So we’re open sourcing our internal OCR benchmark + evaluation datasets. Full writeup + data explorer here: https://getomni.ai/ocr-benchmark Github: https://github.com/getomni-ai/benchmark Huggingface:…

Over the weekend I was discussing the latest news relating to open weights with some of my non-techie friends. After 30 mins of waffling, I realised it is quite a long and interesting story, with many twists and turns. I've always wanted to create a 'long scroll' story, but have never found a suitable story to tell. This felt like a fun weekend project to undertake. The story itself doesn't have too many scroll effects (which is probably a good thing), it was more about trying to tell a story with a certain style that wouldn't really fit on my personal blog. Would love to get your feedback…

This is a GPU "software" raytracer (i.e. using manual ray-scene intersections and not RTX) written using the WebGPU API that renders glTF scenes. It supports many materials, textures, material & normal mapping, and heavily relies on multiple importance sampling to speed up convergence.

Creating high-quality scientific figures can be time-consuming and challenging, even though sketching ideas on paper is relatively easy. Furthermore, recreating existing figures that are not stored in formats preserving semantic information is equally complex. To tackle this problem, we introduce DeTikZify, a novel multimodal language model that automatically synthesizes scientific figures as semantics-preserving TikZ graphics programs based on sketches and existing figures. We also introduce a Monte Carlo Tree Search-based inference algorithm that enables DeTikZify to iteratively refine its…

This is a little hobby project that I hope you enjoy. You can see where the International Space Station is now, with live HD video from NASA, on a realistic 3D globe. The positions of the sun and moon are also accurate, though distances aren't to scale. The clouds are also near-realtime; I span that out into a separate project at https://clouds.matteason.co.uk, where the cloud images I create from EUMETSAT data are freely available. I've got more features almost ready to go, like the ability to turn off all UI, toggleable clouds and turning off the day/night cycle I'd love for…

Commented on yesterday's Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026), thought I might as well submit a Show HN. If you see climbing world cup/championship, there is this 3D modelling thing [1]. I want that for my weekly bouldering. I scanned my local climbing gym into 3D mesh using iphone. Built a simple editor to trim, merge, move/rotate meshes. You can interact with the mesh, view routes, view climb, etc. So this is unlike many gaussian splatting projects where the main use is for viewing. I built a pipeline in updating climbing walls. Climbing routes are manually annotated.…

Just a fun hack I did while bored over the weekend. My wife was busy shopping, it got me thinking that can VLMs solve the indoor location problem in a mall? Can I just show a VLM a map and an image and have it doa good enough job locating me? I hacked this P.O.C and it seems to work.

I was playing with this for a few weeks over the holiday break. This is one of the GS3D sample scenes running on PCVR at about 65 FPS. I'm sorting on the CPU at the moment, so there are some hitches, but it works! I may publish this as a Unity asset. (I'd love to get it working on Vision Pro, but we'll see.)

I want to rebuild ARKit's VIO and depth estimation in an open-source way. This is a blog post on the steps I'm taking to build this out. Mostly data work to start and choosing the right dataset to do it (in this case ARKitScenes!) Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey everyone, I wanted to share what I have been working on recently. I had this itch for a long time to figure out if terrain contour matching could help with ground navigation, by only only relying on iphone's sensors and public data. So far I have had decent results. This is a working prototype, but there is a lot that is in the pipeline. If you notice anything weird, let me know or open a PR. Any feedback, comments are welcome :)

As a hiker and (ski)mountaineer I've always been a bit disappointed of how most apps fail to properly depict the topography while analyzing GPS tracks. (I know that Strava offers some kind of 3D view by now, but I still wanted to build my own thing) That's why I started working on https://cubetrek.com It's still very experimental, but you can give it test-drive now. Any feedback appreciated. It essentially renders your GPS Track as a 3D model within the topography. As an example, here's the Bishorn, a 4000 m peak in Switzerland: https://cubetrek.com/view/5807…

Hello! I am working on SlamDunk, a lightweight and easy-to-use visualization library built with C++. I started the project out of a personal need - I am in the process of learning about SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) and found the lack of visualization tools very limiting. This is why I'm making this tool - it aims to allow the user to make powerful live visualizations without a lot of boilerplate and fiddling with rendering loops and computer graphics. SlamDunk is built with OpenGL and ImGui, so it is very lightweight. Please let me know what you think!

I built sensor fusion for a mobile robot and reached for robot_localization like everyone does. After spending too long fighting navsat_transform, UTM zone boundaries, and YAML covariance tuning, I wrote my own. FusionCore is a 22 state UKF that fuses IMU, wheel encoders, and GPS in ECEF directly (no coordinate projection, no extra node). It estimates IMU bias, adapts its noise covariance automatically from the innovation sequence, and gates outliers with a chi squared test on every sensor. I benchmarked it against robot_localization EKF on 6 sequences from the NCLT public dataset…

Dear HN, this is Alex, cofounder of Moonvision, an Austrian based computer vision company. We started in 2017 tracking grilled chicken at the Oktoberfest Munich [1] and transitioned into automating visual inspections tasks. Our web tools are used by quality assurance experts to manage training data and create custom models without an external workforce. For such tasks and experts, the effort to label data is often prohibitive. Therefore, we built tools that work with low amounts of initial data. To train a new pipeline we cover the following 6 steps: - Video gathering - Object mining -…
