I was at FB/Meta from late 2013 to early 2023, mostly working in the compiler/runtime spaces. I got hit in the spring 2023 layoff wave. I immediately started making games in my newfound free time (a lifelong interest, and I even worked in AA(A?) back ca. ~2000), and in October 2023 I stumbled upon the idea of a roguelike pachinko/plinko game inspired by Luck Be A Landlord. Things snowballed quickly, I started talking to publishers, then worked like crazy through all of 2024, almost the hardest I've ever worked in my career, and launched the game in December 2024. It's sold…

I've seen some interests in (simulation) video games here on HN so I thought I'd share a short version of our story. More than 6 years ago, me and my friend from university were playing around with an idea of making a game we always wanted to play. We worked on it on weekends but the progress was quite slow, especially due to so many dead ends and wasted effort. Eventually however, we solidified our direction and decided to take the risk to resign from our well paid SWE jobs and work on it full time. It took more than a year but yesterday we have finally released it on Steam:…

I'm a software developer with 20+ years of experience but during this time I never programmed any games, but I really wanted to for the longest time. With the advent of AI coding agents I thought that this is the best time to try and so I've learned a bit of Phaser.js (a Javascript based game engine) and entered Beginner's Jam Summer 2025 - a game jam for beginners in the game dev industry that allows AI coding. After around 25-30 hours (working mainly after my full-time day job) I managed to submit the game I called "Tower of Time" (the theme of the jam was "Time Travel"). You can play it…

I posted once before but wanted to share again because a lot has changed. There's now a fairly strong bot to play against (contributed by a community member) and also correspondence games. The combination of these things helps a bit in finding people to play against.

Hi HN! I love imagining the past, so I made Time Portal, a game where you are dropped into a historical event and see AI video footage from that moment. You have to guess where you are in time and on the map. It’s like GeoGuessr (and heavily inspired by it!) but for historical events. The videos are all created with AI. It’s a pipeline of Flux (images), Kling (video), and mmaudio (audio). The videos aren’t always historically accurate to the last detail. They might incorporate elements of folklore or have details from popular beliefs about the way things looked rather than the latest…

This is something that I've been working on on-and-off in my spare time for the last few years. I started in 2020 during Covid trying to do a Mount and Blade style map in UE4, and it grew from there until where it is now - I would just add a feature, then another, until it came together. Since the start of the year I've really been trying to polish it some more. I've got the full thing planned for a Q3 25 release. Hey all! I whipped together this game where you're given a set of events and need to arrange them in chronological order. Looking for y'all to try it out and let me know what you think and what could be better. Made with Next, Firebase, and Tailwind. The source code can be found at https://github.com/ajhenry/chronle.com. Thanks - ajhenry

I'm calling this "Vibe Discovery" — distinct from vibe coding because I didn't know the requirements upfront. Started with "make something with the accelerometer" and discovered through 6 iterations that I wanted a WebGL marble game. The interesting part was the dev setup: Claude Code running in Termux on a Redmi Note 9 (4GB RAM). The same-device feedback loop — code, test accelerometer, react, iterate — made rapid discovery possible in a way that laptop-to-phone deployment wouldn't.

VibeSolve is an open-source tool that turns a plain-English description of an optimisation problem into Timefold code. Mathematical optimisation is a branch of mathematics and computer science that searches for the minimum/maximum of objective functions, and has applications in transport, logistics, scheduling etc. We are exploring where LLMs can add value in optimisation algorithm development, and where they get in the way. Right now, it works well for rapid prototyping. It does not create production-ready code and requires technical skills to use. It is noticeably better at creating…

I'm using AI (mostly Claude) to create/publish a new video game every day This is day 33, first stab at the tower defense genre. Most of the games (including this one) I build with a single prompt. Rarely, a couple extra prompts are needed for bug fixes or to tweak the physics/UI. Extremely rarely, the AI has difficulty making the game work right (usually drawing it) and it takes a dozen or more prompts -- but the majority of the time, it gets everything right and makes a fully playable game first try Happy to answer any questions, just a little hobby project of mine I'm having…

I built Chronoscope, a project to explore the world through time. I've been wanting to do this for a while, after being inspired by Ollie Bye's "History of the World" video several years ago. I'm not the first person to have done this - resources like OpenHistoricalMaps are amazing. But, I noticed there were a few disparate datasets / academic databases online, so I combined them together as best as I could (I've linked all sources in the app). To make it more interesting, I also included: - Notable events from the time period (geolocated where possible), sourced from wikidata - Ancient…

I made a strategy game where you play the US or China through the AI race, 2026 to 2030, sixteen quarterly turns in the browser. One run takes about half an hour. At the start, the game seals two dice you never get to see. Inside: how hard alignment really is, and how fast takeoff compounds. You get eval reports, but only as ranges, and they flatter you most exactly when your systems are least aligned. At the end you get a debrief which shows what your evals said each quarter and also what was actually true. I lost every run I played myself so far. Every number in the game is source-backed…
