Hey everyone! After another year of building as a solo dev on nights and weekends, I'm back with an update on this post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31083093. TL;DR - ProjectionLab (https://projectionlab.com) is a privacy-friendly personal finance planning tool where you can create financial plans that go beyond the standard online retirement calculators. And by popular request, it now supports self-hosting for Lifetime users! Something I'm grateful for is that our community here on HN is the difference between PL existing and not. There was actually a time…

Hey HN, As someone who geeks out on both investment data and privacy tech, I built Capitally to scratch my own itch. It's encrypted on-device so that once I can afford to hire a second engineer, he cannot peek into my own data! I wanted a way to monitor ALL my investments (stocks, crypto, real estate, angel investments, etc.) in one place and really dig into the data - but without compromising my privacy. Here's how Capitally makes that possible: On the data side: Import data from CSVs, spreadsheets, or any other source via a flexible no-code editor Map any data format into a standardized…

I'm Canadian, live abroad, and my money is scattered across two countries, multiple currencies, banks, brokerages, real estate, and some private equity. No app could hold all of it, and none could answer a simple question like "what's my actual USD exposure?" Brisa pulls everything together (Plaid + manual accounts + real estate + PE, all multi-currency) and puts an AI on top that has my full financial picture in context. Instead of clicking through charts, I can just ask. Would appreciate any feedback!

Hey HN! Today I'm launching Pane, a tool that gives AI context on your financial data. Once connected, any MCP-compatible client (Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, etc.) can answer questions like: - "What did I spend on food this month?" - "What's my net worth right now?" - "Show me my recurring subscriptions" - "How much do I owe across all credit cards?" - "What are my investment holdings?" It's been really transformative in helping me and some of my friends understand their finances, where they are overspending, or even being double billed in some cases. I'm very aware that this is a somewhat…

Hey HN, I'm Steve, co-founder of Factor.fyi, a new data platform for querying and visualizing financial datasets using SQL. During the pandemic, I took much more of an active role in managing my portfolio. I wanted to be able to make informed decisions about the investments I was making, and explore financial data in new ways. Market and Econ data are some of the most talked-about and widely-available datasets out there, but I was frustrated by the lack of options to answer questions I had, like, "What would have happened if I had started dollar-cost averaging VTI back in 2013?"[1] Or, "How…

Hi everyone! I’ve been working on a small personal finance tool called Tender for the better part of a year. I got tired of doing expenses by hand - going through several accounts to figure out refunds, subscription cancellations, getting paid back via venmo, etc. I’d get to the point where I’d have to go through months of transactions at a time if I got lazy and fell behind. The workflow in Tender is centered around getting to inbox-zero. Transactions leave the inbox when they’re categorized and there’s a basic rules engine for automation. You can also do things like add notes, set…

I've been using this daily for 4 months and figured others might find it useful. This is my first open source project so would love any feedback. Ray connects to your bank via Plaid, stores everything in an encrypted local SQLite database, and lets you ask questions about your finances in natural language. No cloud, no account, your data is stored on your machine. Before anything reaches the LLM, all PII is stripped — your name, companies, transaction details are redacted and replaced with tokens, then rehydrated locally in the response. The AI never sees who you are.
